The first convenience stores opened in 1980. Because Taiwan had one of the world’s highest population densities, it was a major target for convenience stores (and still is today). Taiwan was such a successful place for these stores. While America did horizontal zoning, Taiwan built their buildings with vertical zoning. Taiwan 7-elevens offer many more services, products, cooked food options, and local delicacies. The 7-elevens in America offer gas stations while the ones in Taiwan don’t really need the gas stations because everything is in walking distance. Taiwan 7-elevens offer i-Bon machines, day care, and wifi. They meet any need that a customer may have because they go above and beyond. The two countries have very different store designs because of their locations. 7-elevens in Taiwan tend to be in the city while 7-elevens in America can be anywhere. In Taiwan, they are smaller and tend to have a more irregular shape while in America, they tend be bigger and more open. The Taiwan shops have to be smaller because space in the city is harder to come by. The American shops are much bigger because 7-elevens here are usually gas stations and need more room.
