7 Deadly Sins Of Hamlet

Improved Essays
In the Tragedy of Hamlet the characters play the seven deadly sins that all humans have committed at some point at our lives. With that being said I would like to describe the top three that I personally think are the most important during the play. The first one is envy- envy is the desire to have what others have in possession. Pride- the is the excessive belief in the abilities which interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of god. The last one is Lust- is inordinate for the pleasures of the body. These are the three deadly sins I would like to talk about and how they connect with play and Hamlet and Claudius.
What started the Tragedy of Hamlet was when Claudius decided to kill King Hamlet for what he has in possession.

For him at first he couldn't believe what his mom had done with Claudius to king Hamlet her husband. Example “ Hamlet is talking about his plan and hamlet refers to Claudius as a peacock” act 3 scene 2 line 265-269. So Hamlet decided to let his pride and anger control his actions against people that surround him specially gertrudes and Claudius, so then he started to make plans of how to punish, drive crazy Claudius and gertrude, make them regret for what they’ve done to the king and at that moment he'll kill them. Hamlet ended up with the idea of making a siliquy dedicated to Claudius and Gertrude. These soliloquy pretty much said what Claudius and gertrude had done to murder the king and what they did after king Hamlet died. Example “Follow him, friends. We’ll hear a play tomorrow. Dost thou hear me, old friend? Can you play ‘The Murder of gonzago”?... I’ll have these players play something like the murder of my father before mine uncle. I’ll observe his looks; I’ll tent him to the quick...” Hamlet act 2 scene 2 line 545-610. These represent pride because Hamlet didn't let anything of what he had been through bring him down. At the end of the Tragedy of Hamlet Claudius had a cup with venom and Queen Gertrude to a drink and Claudius saw but he didn't say anything or let his pride, regretment ruin his pride to watch Hamlet die. Claudius didn't say anything or do anything to prevent Gertrude to drink that drink, and let her die.“No, no, the drink, the drink! O, my dear Hamlet! The drink, the drink! I am poisoned.” Gertrude act 5 scene 2 line

How stand I then, That have a father killed, a mother stained, Excitements of my reason and my blood, And let all sleep” (4.4, pg.169, 54-59). Hamlet realized what he was left with, if his honor was taken away, which would be a dead father and a mother who’s honor had been taken by his father’s brother. This soliloquy showed these feeling more than any part of the play before that. It has taken an effect on the audience, for this is the first time Hamlet truly showed his emotions. In the play, Hamlet greatly suffers from his father’s death. With the idea of reordering his world, Hamlet acts with attempts to seek revenge; however, his efforts lead to major chaos. This is primarily seen with the murders of Polonius and Laertes. Hamlet murders the two innocent men in order to achieve revenge, and retribution for Claudius - the murderer of his father. There is one point in the book when Hamlet is standing behind Claudius who is on his knees. The reason he doesn’t kill him then is because he thinks he’s confessing his sins. He states that to kill him now would mean that he would go to heaven. He reasons that it wouldn’t be fair to his father who is forced to spend time in purgatory. To Act or Not To Act: Tragic Flaws in “Hamlet” “Conscience doth make cowards of us all,” (Shakespeare 3.1.83). This quote from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a starting point to show a main characters tragic flaws. For Hamlet, the main character in the play, he often procrastinates in completing tasks. Moreover, even once he completes an action he tends to overthink his decision. By allowing Hamlet to have destructive flaws, one being procrastination and the second being indecisiveness it shows that these flaws bring Hamlet to his downfall.…

Hamlet is portrayed as a gritty anti-hero with human flaws and qualities such as arrogance, apathy and paranoia, which are revealed in his hamartia and peripeteia. Hamlet’s selfishness fuels his revenge against Claudius but he follows through intelligently, but arrogantly as he refuses to consider the welfare of others. Hamlet’s revenge triggered a series of remorseless murders in the name of his father. The constant surveillance on Hamlet instigated his constant paranoia of being watched and plotted against because his trust was always betrayed. Gertrude’s hasty marriage and Duncan’s surreptitious murder infuriates Hamlet’s enough to feel obligated to avenge his father’s death mercilessly while demonstrating anti-heroic qualities of hamartia…

If Claudius never existed there would be no Hamlet. King Hamlet would have probably died of natural causes or something else and when he died, Hamlet would just take the throne without any problem. Claudius set up the whole play from the moment he poured the poison down King Hamlet’s ear. With the crown as his goal he tells the public that his “dear brother” died after being bitten by a snake, and proceeds to take Elsinore and Gertrude. After the ghost of King Hamlet tells Hamlet that, “that incestuous, that adulterate beast, with witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts….won to his shameful lust the will of my most seeming-virtuous queen.”, that is what starts the plot as Hamlet is now filled with anger and revenge as he says, “It is 'Adieu, adieu!…
