This 69 year old man lives alone, this can lead to feelings of isolation but this is common with 25% of those 65-75 living alone rising to 49% of all people aged over 75 living alone. He has been treated for diabetes for 15 years and takes insulin and metformin and has had two heart bypass operations, 20.8% of men 65-74 have ischemic heart disease in the UK (ONS, 2015). The patient's mobility is poor and a mobility scooter/electric chair is used for most trips, there are estimated to be 300,000 in use in the UK, as the population ages these will become ever more common. Due to the significant impact the loss of mobility would have on the patient's independence and because there is no legal requirement and no snellen acuity requirement is listed for mobility scooter driving I would in this situation advise the patient to have a friend or family member measure 12.3m outside and then satisfy themselves that they can reach the recommended standard and if they cannot then they should seriously consider ceasing the use of the mobility scooter.

It maybe in the future that wearable technology is able to assist the visually impaired with the google glasses potentially being able to take an image of what is in front of the visually impaired person and then image being uploaded to the cloud and then the description being read back. This may have a significant impact on independance in the medium term .

Occulus Rift VR which is due for release in Q1 2016 is a virtual reality system which could be harnessed to provide similar improvements to mobility and provide warning of obstacles risks or other information as required.
