The purpose of this lab is to identify various active ingredients of 6 unknown analgesic mixtures. Then the retention factor value, Rf, obtained from the experiment will be used to compare to a table to match each unknown mixture to its commercial name. This will be done through a process called chromatography.
Chromatographic separation is similar to extraction, in that, it relies on the distribution of the compounds in the mixture between two phases. Separation is based on a compounds affinity for a mobile phase verses a stationary phase. A compound that absorbs more in the stationary phase will move through the system at a slower rate thus separating the components.
