What comes to the mind when we use the word “memory”? According to the Developmental Psychology textbook, the word memory is defined as the retention of information that occurs over time. From other people’s perspective, it can be a negative memory as well as a positive memory, such as earning your first paycheck or having your first car accident. Did you know that preschool children are likely to pay attention to something that stands out to them or is salient to them(Santrock)? When the preschool children are transformed to teenagers and adolescents, they focused to have an extended engagement which is called sustained attention. Also, adolescents like myself, I always wondered why are memories are significant in everybody’s life? From my point of view, memories matter because it can change us or be stuck with us. Memories can be reflected on how you are able to make it salient, so you can retrieve and store memories effectively. …show more content…
One of the results was that I was able to win a prize from the D.A.R.E essay contest. I remember spending my weekends writing on how drugs or alcohol can be detrimental to your future. I did not think that I would win this essay contest even though I work on it for two months because I thought I put enough effort just to increase my grade in language arts class. At composition classes at Blue Ridge Community College, I still think that writing is a challenge for me. I like taking challenges because it is important to challenge yourself mentally as well as physically.
Memory can be retrieved or store effectively by using 5 senses. Even though, I had a negative fourth grade experience, I wished that I was able to retrieve a positive memory instead of a negative memory. Well, actually this negative memory turned to a positive memory when I asked help from my father. Hopefully, some of your memories in life will be made up of positive
