However, psychological factors including depression, anxiety and low self-esteem, plays an important role in smoking behavior. In the same way pregnant women who smoke display the same characteristics. These psychological factors play a critical role in the process of quitting smoking. Additionally, studies have shown how smoking operates as a coping mechanism, and how smokers believe that cigarettes help them cope with negative emotions. Coping is defined as “cognitive and behavioral efforts to reduce or tolerate the external and/or external demands that are created by stress.” That is why pregnant smokers may smoke because they have fewer resources available to cope with life stressors. It is more likely a pregnant smoker will choose to buy cigarettes due to its cheap price. First of all, the number of women used for this study was smaller than what a study would use. Secondly, the most important factor I think they messed up on was not performing this questionnaire to women who were at the same stages of their pregnancy.
