In 2014, there were 11.3 million illegal immigrants in the United States (“5 Facts About Illegal Immigration in the U.S.”). That number currently makes up 3.5% of the U.S. population. The issue of illegal immigrants has been brought up recently in the 2016 presidential campaign race by a Republican candidate, Donald Trump. Trump proposed the idea that he would build a wall along the Mexican border to prevent illegal entrance into our country. An immigration restriction such as a wall/barrier is not a reasonable approach to prevent illegal immigration because historically these walls have not worked, they cost too much money to build and maintain, and they do not completely prevent people from crossing over.
