LESSON OBJECTIVE: SWBAT –
1. Understand and critique the theories on the origin of the ocean.
2. Utilize world map to identify the seven continents and five oceans.
3. Label and match oceans to the connecting/corresponding continent.
4. Compile a topographical list of characteristics of the ocean.
5. Determine commonality between sea and ocean.
6. Differentiate between the saltwater of the ocean to the freshwater of lakes and rivers.

MEAP VOCABULARY: Amphibious, herbivores, mammals, extinction. MATERIALS: Television, “Ocean Life” video tape, text book, “Mammal Worksheet”, paper, pencil, ink pen.

BELL WORK - “Do Now”: Define vocabulary words from the board.

GUIDED PRACTICE: Issue a 5 minute vocabulary quiz on words from 04/24/07. Q&A on the key concepts from the video. Work with students on the first two questions on the “Mammal Worksheet” INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Students will complete the “Mammal Worksheet”.

CLOSURE: Assess and discuss the “Mammal Worksheet” with students.

SUMMARY/EVALUATION: Constructed response.

HOMEWORK: Students will write 3 paragraphs comparing and contrasting herbivores and carnivores. Study all vocabulary words.

ADVANCED PREPARATION: Generate ocean ecosystem worksheet and handout - 04/26/11.
