Steel burn time rating of 2-3 hours should be required for structures over 75ft tall to aid in the safe evacuation of occupant before a structure collapse. If steel beams are restrained, as by a masonry structure, and the temperature of the fire is sustained at around 1,000 degrees, the expansion of the steel may cause the displacement of the masonry, resulting in a partial or total collapse (Corbett & Brannigan, 2015). Next, mandate structures over 75ft are required to provide safe zones (clearly marked) in the event of a collapse on each floor until evacuation or removal can be obtained.
