Abstract In Experiment 4A-4C, an iron (III) oxalate complex was synthesized from iron ammonium sulfate which led to the formation of green crystals. Volumetric analysis using oxidation-reduction titration with potassium permanganate and spectrophotometric analysis were both applied to determine the oxalate and iron content of the synthesis product. The results were used to determine the empirical formula of the product.
The average percent weight of the oxalate (+2) was determined to be 54.00% + 0.74% and the average percent weight of the iron (+2) was determined to be 10.81% + 0.96%. Using this information, the empirical formula was determined to be K3[Fe(C2O4)3]·4H¬2O, with a potassium weight percent of 22.7% and a water weight percent
