In order to be a good and effective manager one must possess four basic characteristics. He or she must be able to plan, be organized, have good leadership skills, and have control of their work environment. Management is explained by Robbins & Coulter (2007), as someone who coordinates and oversees the work activities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively. I will explain each areas function and there importance in the managerial process. I will conclude with an example of how a manager would use each function in the workplace.

All managers Burrow & Everard (2004) states, “must make product, marketing, personnel, and financial decisions every day” (p. 275).

If I were the owner of a small residential construction company, specializing in framing, I would consider the following. I would begin by first going over the blueprints to determine in what order the house will be constructed. Once that is decided, I hire 10 to 15 people to assist in construction. I then would select 1 or 2 as crew leaders to assist in implementing each area of construction. It is common in the construction industry to have a large Hispanic employee population so it would be helpful to include someone who speaks Spanish.

Once the hiring is complete then jobs responsibilities are assign based on experience and knowledge. Each employee must be able to work efficiently and effectively. Throughout the day it is my responsibility to make sure the construction is going as planned. Before construction is complete I line up future work based on an estimation of completion of current construction. Based on the size of the house being framed, I can determine the length of time needed to complete which is usually 1 to 2 weeks.

This brief scenario shows the managerial functions needed for a small business owner. Planning, determines the size of project, estimate length of job. Organizing, hiring workers and assigning job specific task, and implement
