4.4.1 Initiative One
The establishment of a fruit and vegetable garden in the grounds of MGGLPS is an initiative that involves students from Grade 3 and 4, this embraces social, economic and ecological themes. A partnership has been created with a local nursery who has agreed to donate some of the resources required to create this. Students will learn about composting from food scraps generated from the MGGLPS canteen. Some of the produce generated can be sold at the local farmers with students assist in managed the stall, some of the proceeds of this can go back into the cost of running the garden. Students will gain experience in operating a retail business and interacting with customers. The MGGLPS canteen can provide some of the produce free of charge to students when they are in season. This has ecological themes. Nature walks will occur at least twice a week. Children are encouraged to walk supervised around the grounds of the nearby Blue Lake National Park to find and observe objects in nature. Different objects to be found maybe different coloured leaves, who can see the biggest tree, focus then comes back to what is on the ground and how did objects get there. It could be a broken branch, bugs or insects on the ground. Currently children use a scrap book acting as a reference tool for future nature walks as children start to identify the name of things they observe. MGGLPS would like to start using an application called Nearpod (Nearpod, 2016). This application enables the sharing of photos with others classroom around the world. Children photograph and then categorise the objects they have found and can share these online.
