What is religion and what is its purpose in our lives? Any sense of God or anything else as close an almighty supernatural force is a prime factor of most religious beliefs. Religion is attached with culture, economic, and politics. It is also attached to our social lives in many different ways even if we try to stay away from it. Religion is a universal institution that is practiced in different ways. According to Melford Spiro, Clifford Geertz, and Gerald James Larson “religion is a cultural system integrated teachings, practices, modes of experiences, institutions, and artistic expressions that release people to what they perceive to be transcendent”. Culture and religion share a symbiotic relationship influencing clothes, hair, attitudes, …show more content…
The first is allegiance to God and believing that Muhammad is his messenger. This pillar is what solely determines if you are a Muslim. The second pillar of Islam is a prayer towards god, which is done five times a day. The times for prayer are sunrise, noon, mid-day, sun down, and early night. The third pillar of Islam is charity. Charity is divided into two groups, giving money to support the teaching of Islam, or helping anyone in need. The fourth pillar is a completion of Ramadan, the holy month where Muslims are supposed to fast from sunrise to sundown for the entire month. The last of the pillars is to make a pilgrimage to Mecca from Medina, as Muhammad did to reclaim his city. After the five pillars, the rest of the religion is derived from the Quran and the Hadith. The Quran is the revelations that Muhammad received put into one text, and the Hadiths are the in-person accounts of what Muhammad lived like. I asked about any sort of dancing, music, or art incorporating the religion.
