3rd Grade Reading

Improved Essays
Third grade reading time was the event that propelled me into reading. Most of my classmates would typically find a book that interested them with ease and quickly find a place to begin reading; whereas I would have an oddly hard time finding a book of interest. So much so that I developed the habit of just grabbing a random book, to give me a guise as a reader. As a kid I just could not get into reading for such a small amount of time, and on top of that the books kept in the teacher library were uninteresting. Now most of the time I would choose traditionally structured chapter books. Comics didn’t really appeal to me because of the layout and I always felt that I was missing some part of the story. One day my teacher, Ms. Given, realized …show more content…
I soon realized this was something I enjoyed reading; it was funny because it was everyday life made hysterical. This simple comic caught my interest in reading and began my addiction to Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip written about a bratty kid, Calvin, and his stuffed tiger, Hobbes. After my introduction with the book, I would binge read and was scolded because I could not contain my laughter. I would get in laughing fits over the comic and the teacher would come around and say, “Ok, Jason if you can’t stop I’m going to have to take the book away from you.” Containing my laughter felt like I was coughing with my mouth closed eyes red and tearing up barely able to breath. At the time the political, economical, and psychological elements of satire just flew over my head. What appealed to me was the crazy activities Calvin and Hobbes would do, activities I would never dream of doing. Such as, Calvin getting out of his bath naked and completely soaked, running around the house as his mom chased …show more content…
When I finally finished the book I was disappointed because I thought there were no more tales. I asked my teacher permission to bring the book home so my parents could try and find more. At Christmas I received a collection of five books filled with Calvin and Hobbes. I couldn’t stop reading them. I read during school lessons and before bed everyday. This began my addiction to not only Calvin and Hobbes but to reading in general.
As years passed I moved on from the ridiculous stunts of Calvin and his tiger, but the books remained on the shelf in my room. Every now and then I would open one again and I realized my understanding was amplified as I gained maturity and knowledge. Rereading them was funny because I was able to understand the political, economical, and psychological elements involved in the higher level humor. I realized how limited my understanding had been in the third grade. If I had not encountered Calvin And Hobbes my interest in reading never would have

Ever since I started pre-school, I’ve always been a high grade, top of my class, getting A’s on test student. I loved reading, in fact, one of my favorite places to be was at the public library. My favorite book series when I was a kid included were Captain Underpants, Harry Potter, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I 've always enjoyed reading, but when middle school arrived, that 's when the fixed mindset kicked in. The books I read, the essays I was obliged to write, the homework I was compelled to do, all became stale and boring.…

This assignment presented a bit of a challenge, as it has been slightly over three decades since being a young teen. Also, since books were a significant portion of my life growing up and I was an advanced reader, it remains nearly impossible to isolate, which of the life altering books I read, at which stages of my life. Gone with the Wind, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Women, Diary of Anne Frank, Westmark, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Island of the Blue Dolphins; it seems this list could continue forever, each beloved, tattered book still has a home on my bookcase and in my heart, and have their effect on my life and personal perspective. Although it may be possible I read it slightly later in my teen years, I finally settled on…

Have you ever read a Dr. Seuss book? You would automatically think that all of his books are childish and have no main purpose to them, right? Well, you may have not known this, but even if every single one of Theodor Geisel’s books may be meant for kids, deeply hidden in the childish text is a meaningful message. Seuss inscripts a deep message into his books because he wants to express his feelings during a specific part of his life in the form of children’s literature. Two of his books, entitled The Lorax and The Sneetches, published on August 12th, 1971, and August 28th, 1961, respectively.…

Children are often seen as living in a bubble, innocent and untouched from life's harsh realities. Therefore, in order to explain difficult topics to them, it is common for adults to use animated, witty stories in hopes of protecting the child's pure outlook on life. In both “A Barred Owl” and “The History Teacher”, Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins allocate explanations to children in hopes of protecting them from what is really at hand. In “A Barred Owl”, Wilber uses the animations of the owl to bring ease to a frightened girl while Collins uses stories and play on words to distract the students from the tougher reality in “The History Teacher.” Both poets use literary devices to display how adults white lies can sway a child's perception despite having good intentions.…

If you were a reader of Dr. Seuss then you at least had a sense that the sky is the limit, and life is full of adventures. Since the beginning of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbles in 1985, I have been one of the great fans. The Calvin and Hobbles comic strip is about Calvin and Hobbes imaginative world. The book was first published in November 1985 and held a wide popularity until December 1995 when it was sent to the printing press. It has appeared in more than a decade and the readers have been delighted by its incorrigible twosome. Their adventures and conversations of the pair make the case one that is used today as it was in the first published.…

hort stories are some of the first stories and tales that children become familiar with in their lives. However, as we get older sometimes we forget what these stories are about, their stories that have positive family and life values, or can be ways that continue to shape our lives as we grow. The Cat in the Hat and the Grinch, along with others by Dr. Seuss are some of that the coolest and well know short stories out there. I also like the morals and quotes in the short stories, that always rhyme and always have good positive uplifting meaning behind them. A list of quotes by Dr. Seuss that are interesting and meaningful are: Today you are you!…

Having these stories read to me when I was young sparked my interest in reading from a young age. I consider my grandmother one of my most beneficial literacy sponsors because without her, maybe I wouldn 't have had such an interest in reading and writing. Learning to read was way harder than I had expected it to be. Of course it wasn 't rocket science or anything, but it seemed to come naturally to my family members and others who read to me. I understand now that it was because they had been doing it for years, but learning was definitely a struggle.…

My first memory of reading was when I was little, about 4 or 5, and my mom would read to me when I was going to bed. By far my favorite book that she would read to me was “Where The Wild Things Are”. I loved the way the booked looked with the faded looking colors that made it look old and I loved the pictures of the wild things and how the kid was the king and everyone listened to him and I just loved it.…

As I opened the book, a tiger attached to a boy with spiky blond hair bounced off the page, greeting me and the second grader sitting on the floor next to me. My finger touched the blank space right below the type, prompting Sawyer, my “Little Buddy,” to breathe the words on the page. He managed to choppily enunciate the words he saw, but the toothy smile he gave me when he was done reading the comic displayed a much deeper understanding than his initial speech had indicated. Quickly, I became the Hobbes to his Calvin as our world transformed into the one on the page.…

An Insatiable Appetite “A Sweet Devouring” by Eudora Welty is a descriptive essay. Welty describes how she indulged in reading numerous books as a child. She says, “The pleasure of reading itself – who doesn’t remember? – were like those of a Christmas cake, a sweet devouring” (Welty, 247). She compares reading books to eating pieces of cake on a special occasion. The title is significant because it represents Welty’s insatiable appetite for repetitive consumption of engaging adventures hidden between the pages of books.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could.
