3rd Grade Math Analysis

Great Essays
This analysis is from the data of the 3rd grade math assessment. There are 22 students assessed using 10 questions specifically from the operations section of the common core standards. In this class 50% of the students fall into the emergent range in this section. That is a very high percentage of students to be in the developing stage. In this analysis it will be determined exactly what areas the students are struggling in and how can they be helped. There are several standards addressed in the Operations section of the test. The standards used in this section falls under the Operations and Algebraic Thinking section of the common core standards. The specific sections tested were sections 3.OA.1-3.OA.9.
In these specific sections the

The problems were:
Number 44- 90% of the students missed this problem. This was a division word problem that required the students to develop an equation. 50% of the students picked the same wrong answer showing that they had no clear understanding of how to solve this type of problem.
Number 47 - 63% of the students got this problem wrong. This problem ask the students to use division to solve the problem and they were not able to do that.
Number 53- 63% of the students also missed this problem. This problem presented the students with a chart to complete that could of been determined using multiplication or division to solve. There was also a pattern that could have been determined to help solve.
Number 56- 81% of the students missed this problem. This was another word problem that dealt with multiplication. 50% of the student picked the answer that used addition instead of

Based on the problems the majority got wrong the students don't have a good understanding of multiplication, division, equations and word problems. All 10 questions that were used in the operation session of this test involved using multiplication and division and some were presented either as an equation or in word problem form. Using the unwrapped standard method and breaking down what specifically the students need to learn in this standard will be very beneficial. This classroom would benefit from differentiated instruction in those areas to teach those things, and show the students different ways they relate and how to solve them. For example; showing the different ways that multiplication and division are inverse operations and relate to one another. It will be advantageous to teach with example problems where the student have to find the missing number in both multiplication and division. Pre-teaching and teaching those vocabulary words used in the test like product and number sentence (equation). Having the students write out their explanation for solving problems using the correct vocabulary so they are clear about the meaning and become use to seeing the words. Then the students should be taught several ways to develop and solve equations. Equations confused majority of the students so it clearly

The client does know that she can’t take a bigger number away from a smaller number with the kind of subtraction that she is currently doing in school, but she did not recognize that 14 was her whole number and that 6 and 8 were parts of her whole number. Instead of taking the whole and subtracting a part from it (14 – 8 = 6 or 14 – 6 = 8) she used the numbers in the order that they were already in and left the 14 out completely. She did understand that 8 is bigger than 6 and that she would not have any amount of that 6 remaining. Another problem read “How many more is 70 than 50?” She put down a question mark for her answer, clearly showing that she does not understand the question and has a lack of understanding of academic language that relates to subtraction.…

As a whole, the class average was around 60% percent, meaning the class is on the developing or adequate level of understanding the learning objective. A quarter of the class passed the assessment with 85 or better, which is considered a mastery under the math curriculum followed. Half the class scored a 65 or less. This shows that these students have a minimal to no understanding of the concept being taught. 8 out of the sixteen students understood procedurally and conceptually how to compare to objects with a third object.…

The article is titled “Why Do Americans Stink at Math?” by Elizabeth Green. This article discusses and evaluates the method in which math is taught to children in American schools. In addition, Common Core and the lack of implications of Common Core in the American education system raise questions throughout the article; however, why is Common Core not used efficiently in United States when we are credited for inventing the Common Core method? The goal of the article is raise awareness about the inefficiency of the teaching methods in the United States and around the world by improving the efficiently in teaching children subject matter by implanting the idea of Common Core.…

We did the same steps and multiplied 23 and 1000 then divided it by 75 to get x equals 307. So out of 1000 people, 307 would like a healthy food restaurant. For the Dippin’ dot’s proportions we set up another proportion for the students (5/40 = x/1000) we did all the same steps and multiplied 5 and 1000 then divided by 40. Once we did the math we figured out that out of 1000 students 125 would like Dippin’ dots. The adults was a little lower with the outcome and proportion (3/35 = x/1000).…

To introduce the concept of order of operations to the students I would first write PEMDAS on the board which stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction. I would put brackets around M and D, and A and S, to show that they are grouped together in the order of operations. “One misconception by students is that all multiplication should happen before all division because the multiplication comes before division in the acronym. In fact, multiplication and division have the same precedence and should be evaluated as they appear from left to right.”(NCTM) I would explain to them that we are going to go over a few expressions using the order of operations then we are going to play a game of bingo using the order of operations.…

Occasionally, I am still met with decisions which test this understanding, however, I can now see the imperativeness of the learning process behind all mathematical skills, not just division, as students learn best with the instruction of a professional teacher; one who is experienced and knowledgeable in what they are teaching (Lakin,…

There are so many reasons people are pro homework. People say “it helps them become smarter or helps them on test,” But there is a lack of evidence where it actually supports their claims, that it helps students at all especially at such a young age. with Alfie Khon “The positive effects of homework are largely mythical.”(Khon). It also seems that homework is being forced onto younger students more often than the older ones. I remember getting tons of homework in Elementary school, and not having the time to play outside, the stress, and my parents struggling to help me on problems I didn’t know.…
