39B: Improving My Writing Skills

Portfolio Introduction By attending 39B, I improved my writing skills. When I first attended the class, I felt the challenge of writing 39B. From writing 39A to writing 39B, it has a long distance of span. Thinking deeply and writing clearly are the two essential things for writing. However, the most important thing is to love writing. People who loves writing have a creative ideas and better writing skills. Gradually, I found that I love writing. The first thing that I improved is that I wrote rough draft in a piece of paper before typing into a computer. When I wrote my RA paper, honestly, I did not read the short story carefully. I roughly read it. When I wrote my essay, it is hard for me to analyze, and found my evidence. Then, I read it for about five times. Looking up to the dictionary, I found a lot of ideas coming up to my mid. For example, in my essay of short story, I said, “After they finish the small tiff, “They joined hands consciously”(4). The word “consciously” highlights that they need to make effort to think before joining hands. From this action, we know that they start to doubt their marriage in their heart. Then, “They walked over to a bar on Eighth Street, not saying anything, Michael automatically helping her over curbstones and guiding her past automobiles” (6) Michael’s action is automatic because he has an intuitive feeling to protect his wife. Although he already has made her sad, he wants her to keep safe”. In here, you can see that I describe two words “consciously”, and “automatically” in detail because I looked them up in dictionary. After knowing the meaning of these two words, I understood the behavior of the character, and then I analyze
