In Sharon Old’s poem “35/10”, Old’s contrast the characteristics of an older woman and her youthful daughter. “Olds’s poetry is known for its accessible and direct free verse style.” (poetryfoundation.org) This poem is no different; it is composed of one stanza in free verse style. The title 35/10 is a simple symbol of one thing that is greater in size or amount than another. In this case an assumption can be made that this is the age of the mother and daughter. The older woman in the poem is the one narrating this poem as she is brushing her daughter’s hair. Through the poem a sense of envy is revealed from the mother. Cummings can be interpreted as a prayer as it is acknowledging Gods gifts and expressing his gratitude for them. The title suggests that the poet views God as a higher power than himself as he capitalizes “ You God” but not “i” This contrast is bold and stands out as soon as you see the title. The tone of this poem is sincerely reflective and jovial. The poem is written in 4 stanzas, which consists of three quatrains and a couplet. Cummings is known for his experimental style using poetic form and language. The poem is an expression of the narrative voice of thankfulness for life and nature. He describes the sky as “ a blue true dream of sky” (1095) for me this line evokes an image of the sky after rain, no cloud in sight a clear blue sunny day. I can even smell the scent of the fallen rain and feel the raindrops under my feet. There is also a line stating that “now my eyes of my eyes are opened” (1095) this makes me think of when I have been exposed to something I did not know that was eye opening, like when I learned about slavery. That feeling when a person is exposed to a truth that is earth shattering. Through the use of diction and personification the words really come alive. The theme of this poem is clearly rebirth through spirituality. Through the poem the narrator is speaking about how he senses the world through a spiritual perspective. This perspective gives him a rebirth making him feel like he has limitless opportunity. He states, “this is the birth day of life, of love and wings of the gay happening illimitably earth”(1095), this diction shows his strong emotion toward his spirituality. He is experiencing the world in a way he has not before with his “ears of my ears awake” (1095). It is clear the narrators feels his spirituality has opened his mind to new things , a new
