She displays the positive consequences that may come with taking risks. At the beginning of the movie, Maggie appears in a shady corner of the boxing arena, standing by the exit signs. This is symbolizing the exit from her past life, entering a new life she wants to create for herself, which is boxing. Maggie wanted to be trained by Frankie, but Frankie was quick to shut her down by saying “I don’t train girls” and “tough ain’t enough” when Maggie was describing how strong she is. She took a risk with her unstable financial situation, which one is able to observe due to her shady, small apartment. As a matter of fact, she even was bringing home leftover food from her shift as a waitress back home, telling others “It’s for my dog.” Despite the rejection, Maggie kept saving her money in a jar and soon used it to buy a six-month membership to Frankie’s gym. Eddie’s trust in her along with Maggie’s willpower and hard-work finally convinced Frankie to take her up as a trainee. The director used montages to show the passing of time, and viewers witnessed how much Maggie had improved. He felt that Willie was not ready for the championships yet, and he needed more practice and training from him. Blinded by the desire to be safe and guard his trainee, Frankie eventually lost him to Mickey Mack. Mickey promised Willie he would get him the title, and being desperate after waiting for so long, Willie agreed. Frankie should have been more willing to let him fight in the championships to earn the title, then he perhaps would not have lost a fighter he spent eight years training. A common quote Frankie used in Million Dollar Baby was “Always protect yourself.” He let protection get in the way of the relationship between himself and Willie. Too much protection is not always a positive thing. However, this loss that Frankie endured has lead to him becoming more open and he finally was able to see the potential within Maggie. He took the risk of being looked down upon by other trainers and seen as weaker so he could help Maggie improve and become a fighter. Frankie succeeded, and Maggie become very strong and powerful, but eventually was defeated due to impact from a chair when Billy the Blue Bear punched her.
