With the commencement of the play I was indeed confused to say the least. Without prior knowledge about “33 Variations" I walked in with a clean slate unsure about any general idea or theme this play had to offer. My confusion was due to the century gap in clothing. Although it became apparent rather quickly that the modern day clothing represented the present of Dr.Katherine and her daughter Clara, and the romantic style clothing represented flashbacks to Beethoven. This initial misconception was due to ignorance on my behalf, However once I was past this I was able to appreciate the accuracy of the costumes in the portrayal of this back and for the between past and present.

I believe this to be true because of a few key factor. First the acting was on point. What I mean by this is that it did not seem forced. The actors came across rather natural, and this is what helped add to the convincing nature of the play. The act where Clara helped her mother scratch her nose brought me to tears. My reaction to this moment really showed me how convincing the actors were. I was reminded of how my family had to take of my dad when he got really sick with cancer. It made me contemplate whether he felt the same degree of helplessness that Dr.Katherine felt, or what it must have felt like to be completely dependent on his children for care the way Clara helped care for her own mother. I was amazed how through this one scene they could draw so much of a reaction. Second would be how the set was always in line with either present or past. To me the lighting spoke volumes about how minor details play such significant roles. The color, the angle and the brightness helped set the stage for the time period. Lastly I would have to say the spacing of the set. The way in which the stage was laid out in every act help show where they wanted the emphasis to be shown. Depending if they wanted your attention to be on the past or the present they would place them on stage where naturally your attention would be
