The first section is known as reconstruction one which was governed by Abraham Lincoln from 1863 to 1865. The second section is known as the reconstruction two which was governed by Andrew Johnson from 1865 to 1866. Last but not least, the third stage is known as reconstruction three which was directed by congress from 1866 up until 1876. During the first reconstruction President Abraham Lincoln established the Freedmen’s Bureau in March 1865 to assist slaves in the transition from slavery to freedom. Not only did Lincoln assisted the freedmen but he also questioned if blacks, who served in the military, had the right to vote like every other American citizen. However, Lincoln was assassinated and Vice President Andrew Johnson took office. From 1865 to 1866, Johnson wanted to destroy the creation of Freedmen's Bureau and other plans that Lincoln had in mind. During his term, Johnson issued pardons and allowed for Black codes to be passed by all-white legislations. The south began to focus on agriculture and the institution of slavery. On the other hand, the north developed an industrial economy that no longer needed slavery. Constitutional and moral problems arose after the two areas continued to differentiate. Many slaves tried to escape slavery however the majority knew no life other than slavery so they had no other option. The Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 freed slaves in states that were still in rebellion and after the Civil War, the Thirteenth Amendment emancipated all U.S. slaves. President Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation due to the pressure placed upon him coming from the radical republicans who wanted to use the slaves as an opportunity to defeat the south. During the civil war, republicans wanted for the slaves to join the army and fight in the union side. After the Emancipation Proclamation, freedmen had no idea how they were going to survive because they knew no other life outside of the lands they had worked for years. The system of sharecropping became very popular during this time since it provided slaves with a possible solution to their questions. Sharecropping was the system in which the owner of a plantation provided the tools and land while in return the ex-slaves provided the labor. Usually after the harvest season was over the freedmen received fifty percent of the
