Steven has gone through 3 stages of grief, anger, bargaining, and shock. The first stage he went through was shock. He wanted to think that his brother did not have cancer. On page 52 of Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie it states “The longer I pretended everything was normal at school, the more I believed everything was normal. I started thinking over and over again “Doctors are wrong all the time. You hear about these malpractice things everyday where people get medicine that’s not even theirs.”. Here it shows that Steven is pretending that his brother getting cancer never happened. He then got angry.
