3 Branches of the Government When the founding fathers formed the Constitution they wanted a government that did not give one person too much power. In the Constitution it states that the government to separated into three different parts. Each branch has its own responsibilities and tasks they have to perform to help the country succeed and make sure its citizen’s rights are not ignored. The three branches are Legislative, Judicial, and Executive. All three branches use a system of checks and balances to make sure one branch does not become too overpowered. The President, also know as the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, holds the power of the executive branch. She/he is responsible for implementing and enforcing laws written by the Congress. The Executive branch also has a series of checks and balances that are used on the other two branches. One way the Executive branch checks on the Legislative branch is that the President has the power to veto laws passed by the Congress. They also can propose laws to the Congress. The Executive branch also submits the Federal Budget to the House. They also elect federal officials, who carry out and enforce the laws. The Executive branch also has checks on the judicial branch. Officials in the executive branch nominate judges to the Supreme Court and to the federal court system. The President has the ability to pardon any person convicted of a crime. Some of the duties are specified in the Constitution, but most of them have been created over time. The president serves seven main roles. The first role of the president is the Chief of State. She/he serves as a living symbol of the United States as the Chief of State. Another role of the president is the Chief Executive, where she/he is the leader of the millions of workers in the Executive branch. Laws of the United States are decided to be enforced by the president. The president also serves as the Chief Diplomat, where she/he decides what American diplomats and ambassadors say to other foreign governments. A very important duty of the president is serving as the Commander in Chief. She/ he are in charge of the United States military. All military generals and admirals take orders from the President. The president as the Chief Legislator has the power to influence Congress to pass or veto laws that they do not favor. The president also serves as the Chief of Party, where she/he helps members of their respected political party get elected. The last duty of the president is the Chief Guardian of the Economy.
