2Green Tree Voluntary Certification System- (Short Term Goal)

Making a voluntary certification system can help educate interested businesses and showcase their commitment to sustainability to eco-conscious costumers. I have made a “Green Tree” certification program for office tenants interested in improving and quantifying their sustainability at UIC that could easily be adjusted for dining vendors based on community’s sustainability priorities. It’s a Microsoft Excel based certification program made up of four branches of heightened levels of sustainably. For each different action point you complete you receive a certain amount of points that goes towards a green tree branch certification level. These different levels could have positive

For example, not using Styrofoam or serving food in compostable containers could be rated the highest with 3 points. Chicago Green Restaurant Association has some great tips for the most impactful sustainable areas for dining businesses to get started. Once a vendor becomes green tree certified they get a sticker decal for display, advertising their commitment to sustainability, which can help build a competitive spirit among vendors to help reduce their waste levels. This should be made available online to serve as a proxy for communities considering certification programs for their own local businesses. http://www.hamburgermarys.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/greenrestaurant.jpg

Action Items-
1. Calculate most effective point system to decrease waste levels and increase sustainability for dining businesses
2. Develop the excel spreadsheet based on the calculated point system
3. Being release of Green Tree Program to help vendors acclimate to new bans and increase overall sustainability.
4. Make available online to serve as a proxy for communities considering certification programs for their own local businesses.

For any landfill material the vendor would have to buy a sticker to place on their garbage bag for collectors to pick it up. Recycling and compost collection would remain free to encourage those practices.

One practice that would have to change, however, is the decentralized nature of trash disposal. A similar problem is apparent in communities that have multiple garbage collection servers, sometimes moving over to one that collects both residential and commercial waste streams can improve rates. Like San Francisco did with going with one provider for the whole city, Recology. All trash disposals would have to be collected by a building service worker, if they do not see a sticker they would not collect or they would record the offense and charge an appropriate fee. This represents an extra labor cost that the fee would have to accommodate for. The labor costs should not be excessive as many vendors only empty their trash minimally and building service trash collectors already pass by vendors to collect hallway streams. This is still a cost that needs to be calculated and entered

He states that the earth is an ecosystem and demonstrates how human beings, industries, and other facilities pollute the earth which is a closed ecosystem. He further states that most of pollution comes from human beings but not big factories and power plants that everyone thinks. This takes place in the form of small vehicle engines, the noise that people make and lawn mower. All these are referred to as non-point source pollution.…

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

SmartWood was established in 1989 as an international nonprofit environmental group. The intent of SmartWood was that any wood-harvesting company could seek the SmartWood certification upon proving that the wood had been harvested in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) was established a year after SmartWood to establish set standards for forestry certification programs worldwide and to ensure certification organizations complied with these standards. ISO 14001 is international standard for evaluating a company’s EMS. Introduction Fashion is used as a medium for people to express themselves and communicate who they are, however, as a whole, the industry is based on materialism and design obsolescence that undermines the notion of sustainability. Sustainability can be defined as being able to meet the needs of the present without compromising the future economically, socially and environmentally (TFIA, 2014). Designers have a responsibility to work within these guidelines, though most do not. Businesses can control the impact they have on the environment, society and economy by changing their business philosophy, modifying their production processes and products, and by utilising their influence to educate consumers. Business Philosophy and Management Companies have a social, economic and environmental responsibility to partake in sustainable practices.…
