Sometimes the truth about what has happened in the past is the hardest thing most people can do , which is the case in the story “232-9979” written by Carol Edelstein. In the beginning of the story the readers are introduced to the narrator, who questions her decision to call a character who we later find out is Elly Henkins. She calls to tell about what happened 3 years ago on December 19th which involved the narrator and Elly Henkin’s husband Hank Henkins who got into a car accident with the narrator which later ends up leading to a long term affair. I began to notice after reading this passage that she wishes the events leading up to the affair never happened. The narrator says “Nothing else could have happened between us if three weeks later I had not returned a box of farina with flour-beetles to Bonno’s Food Warehouse…” (Edelstein par 2). Then she goes on to say “ How could I have intended for your husband to be right ahead of me in the checkout, buying formula and plastic diapers?” (Edelstein par 2). Throughout the paragraph the narrator goes on to blame other irrelevent situations for her problems. So, to piece this all together she blames all these irrelevant and common situations on her inability to resist temptation.
With everything that has happened to the narrator she uses situations as to blame everything on the affair she had with Hank Henkins in “232-9979” and it having trouble thinking of what to say to Elly Henkins and shows the reader how coming fourth with the truth is the hardest thing for some people to do in a bad
