Not every theory was easily applicable to the society we live in today at first glance. It often took looking closer and the idea the theorist was presenting, looking at the issues going on around us, and figuring out how the two combine. I have never been good at critical thinking. Instead, I think in a very straightforward way, seeing things just as they are. In high school, it was often difficult for me to find the analogies, symbols, and allegories in stories and poems. Having class discussions on the theories we read greatly helped my ability to think critically. Sometimes the theory clicked right away, but other times it wasn’t until I heard the connections that other students made that it finally connected in my own mind. I love the challenge that these theories created and the satisfaction that understanding them brings. Yes, it was frustrating staring at the advertisement that I had chosen for my first essay, trying to come up with captivating ways that it used a theory, but that made it all the more rewarding when I was finally able to make a connection between
