American football was formally created in the early 20th century, starting collegially then later becoming the National Football League (NFL) that we enjoy today. It took many years for the sport to grow the popularity that it needed to become the huge multibillion dollar corporation that it is currently. Players, coaches, and spectators who all enjoyed the game helped it grow and prosper into American football. The ever growing sport of football eventually became a business which was the underlying reason why it grew at such great rates. Once football became a nationwide league and its popularity grew, the business side of it grew even larger. Jobs were created through it; coaches were paid to coach, players were paid to play, and spectators paid to watch. This helped pave a road for what football is today considering it it took the game and created it into not only a business but a dream for all young men to be apart of and entertain millions. By the 1960’s there were two major leagues of football, the National Football League and the American Football League. These two were rivals to each other and they were constantly signing off players who were already in contracts with the opposite league (Remember the AFL). This created great competition and on January 15, 1967, the first Super Bowl commemorated against AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and NFL’s Green Bay Packers. The NFL came out victorious (wiki). Though some would say that it was only fitting for the NFL to win, as Len Dawson, a Chiefs player stated, "The Chiefs were scared to death. Guys in the tunnel were throwing up." This portrayed the superiority that the NFL had over the AFL and would later aid to the joining of the two leagues in 1970 to form the one National Football League of 32 teams. When the two leagues merged, the National Football Conference and the American Football conference was created. The AFL is still alive today though because of the merge, the NFL and the AFL work together and the winners of the two conferences will battle in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is precisely what gave football such a drive for people to watch and play. The ongoing competition all season sparkes desires to root for one team and play against rivals.
