Cortez Masto Ad Analysis: Driving Away Jobs

Superior Essays
Context The 2016 Nevada Senate race is one of the country 's most competitive races. Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, former Nevada Attorney General, and Republican Congressman Joe Heck are competing to replace the retiring Harry Reid. With both parties fighting to control Senate, this close race has attracted the attention of outside groups, including Freedom Partners Action Fund which created the anti-Cortez Masto ad “Driving Away Jobs.”
The Ad
The ad begins with a mother and her young daughter in the girl’s room. The next scene is of a family of four with two young children. The father is helping his young son get his backpack on for school. They are all smiling. During the scenes featuring the families the voiceover says, “In a tough economy, a paycheck can mean everything to your family.” The next image is of an “Uber Pickup”

It gives the impression that she might be ashamed. This feeling is enhanced by words and a voiceover that describe her as caring more about donors and special interests than Nevadans.
Goal and Effectiveness The goal of this ad is to convince voters that Cortez Masto is bad for jobs. The ad uses a legal disagreement with Uber, a popular and well-known ride-sharing service, to make that point. The ad is also trying to undermine Cortez Masto’s character. It is making her out to be a candidate that does favors for special interests over Nevadans. Ultimately, Freedom Partners Action Fund wants Nevada voters to choose Cortez Masto’s opponent. The most successful choice the Freedom Partners Action Fund made was to pick a topic that is relatable. People know what Uber is and people want to know that they have a way to make extra money if they need to. Jobs and the economy are usually the number one concern of voters so playing into this insecurity is a good idea. However, Uber is now legally allowed to operate in Nevada so that makes the topic seem less

At the very beginning of this ad the music automatically sets an easy, comforting feeling. Every scene in this commercial has an emotional affect, but there are a few that significantly seem to impact the onlooker. For example, it is assumed that most families can easily relate to the scene of the couple coming home with the little girls asleep in their arms. In a different picture, a little girl runs into her father’s embrace who seems to be coming home. Later in the commercial another young girl is shown with her father reading her a storybook.…

One commercial that I love is the 2014 Chevorlet Silverado commercial. The company used the broad differentiation strategy. First I would say that they used the unique resign of the exterior as a differentiation. When the commercial first comes on the first thing that catches the consumers eye is the new design of the honey comb grill and headlights. Next, the commercial displayed the truck in motion displaying the redesign of the headlights.…

On the other hand, there are parents who don’t believe in giving their children sweets for obvious reasons. First 5 Contra Costa are those types of parents. Commercial Analysis Critical Thinking Unit 9 The second commercial I chose was one I found ineffective. In fact, I found it gratuitous and wasteful. The video is called Coke Mini (Ant man vs Hulk), it initially aired during the super bowl, and can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlZqBR3yTiw. I understand that there is a belief here associating popular superheroes to Coca-Cola is supposed to sell more cokes.…

Farming and agriculture go hand-in-hand with hard work, and if the viewer of the ad thinks that purchasing a Chevy truck will be enjoyable and will help them to complete hard work, they are far more likely to do so. “Still plays with trucks” is an effective advertisement because it causes the reader to feel a sense of nostalgia and hard work. The “Still plays with trucks” ad uses a rhetorical appeal with pathos very effectively. The words “Some of us grew up playing with tractors and trucks, the lucky ones still do” make the viewer…

In July 2016, after a rough 12 months, Chipotle decided it was time for a new marketing push that would remind customers what drew them to Chipotle in the first place. The plan included a temporary loyalty plan. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the program, the company’s chief creative and development executive, Mark Crumpacker, who had been leading the reboot, was charged with drug possession and named by the police as a repeat buyer of cocaine from a New York delivery service. Research from a review by UBS stated that frequent Chipotle customers “are unlikely to return anytime soon” and “lighter users,” “appear to be much more negatively impacted by the incidents and are more inclined to reduce visits.” Other fast-food restaurants attempted to step in and take advantage of Chipotle’s mishaps.…
