Three Important Academic Skills

This report identifies and justifies three important ‘core’ higher education academic skills which are essential to undergraduates. It recognises and evaluates my personal academic skills in order to aid my understanding into the key areas in which I am strong in and where I can improve upon. Academic skills are shown to associate with essential employability skills to which are crucially needed for employment and businesses in the tourism industry. It also includes a personal audit of my employability skills. To conclude, the report justifies that it is highly important for undergraduates to gain the core academic skills to assist them in graduating and as for employability skills it’s assessed and concluded that they’re greatly needed in …show more content…
University promotes many other experiences for students; such as societies, sport teams and social events, which can collectively hinder the amount of time spent on studying. According to Adair (1998), having an effective balance of good quality study time and a vigorous personal life can help to measure how successful an individual’s time management is. The lack of efficient time management can result in an individual; becoming more forgetful with assignments, loosing priority, and consequently leading to a student focusing more time on one assignment over another more important assignment (Anderson and Bolt, 2013). Procrastinating is a deterrent to effective time management and it can be overcome through imagining the finished task/assignment; the feeling which is received after visualising work completed can actually act as a motivator to begin (ibid). The skills of managing time can be more effective by breaking it down into a specific step by step plan; using timetables, thinking and planning ahead, scheduling time around family and friend commitments, creating balance between academic and paid work, discovering a study method which best suits individual requirements and whilst studying take frequent breaks (National Union of Students, …show more content…
At first I initially found starting assignments to be difficult but I’ve found recently that planning work and creating mini draft deadlines was beneficial because it created structure to my work which also helped with organisation. I still have a disadvantage in time management because I don’t tend to start work early or as soon as it’s given out and I sometimes become rushed with individual assignments. However the stress can give me a positive mental challenge, driving me to complete work within its deadline. I find that I’ve been quite successful in managing my stress levels so far whilst at university and I’ve balanced my social life with study well; choosing to not stay out too late if I have work to be done but also allowing myself breaks with study through seeing friends and family; lowering my stress levels. I’ve learnt the importance of motivation and how it can have a great impact on your time as an undergraduate. In future I’m going to try and become more motivated to attend early morning seminars and lectures as I’ve found that in this area I lack
