20 Year Design Analysis

Great Essays
This report summarizes my 20-year design challenge and it provides a general layout of how I am planning to map out my University education while shaping my pathway to success. Moreover, it also focuses on my current goals as a 1-st year university student, who will slowly mature and develop as a graduate student. Certain sections in this report talk about pathways I may consider down the road, but nothing is set in stone and I will continue to learn more about myself. Currently, if I was to answer the question of where I want to be with my life in 20 years, I would preferably hope to be working in the renewable energy or aviation industry. I want to be an engineer who works with a team to find new renewable energy or even modify previous equipment …show more content…
Firstly, I want to learn to manage my time effectively and my approach to this is to allocate all my time using a chart. I have broken down my week into different activities which include, school, sleep, exercise, studying and free time [Figure 1]. I am giving this strategy a try because, during this term, I noticed that sometimes I would come home and sit around and do nothing since I did not have any plans and this often lead to procrastination. Moreover, I would often spend too much time on a certain assignment since I knew I had the whole day, but if I mapped out my week, I would learn to work more effectively with the time constraint. For instance, instead of taking 4 hours on an assignment, I could get it done in two hours if I had the correct mindset. Secondly, I have looked a little into design teams at waterloo such as formula Electric and the Waterloo Submarine Racing Team and I am interested in joining one. Joining a smaller design team would give me larger responsibilities and I would learn more here at the university of waterloo. I would be responsible for designing certain components and actually apply engineering. My third goal is for my personal well-being and it is to enforce physical activity in my weekly routine. Like I mentioned, in high school I was very active and had the time to participate in teams and clubs, but I have been very busy in university and have gotten sick numerous times. How I plan to achieve this to find a workout buddy such as a student or one of my roommates and develop a schedule to get enough physical activity. Lastly, I have created a chart where it shows important time periods such as exams, so I can plan myself ahead of time. [Figure

Aerospace engineering is a complex, rapidly changing field of engineering. The industry is one the most innovating field of engineering as it is pushing boundaries of technology as we know it; making us achieve almost the impossible. The design, structure and production of a machine that exceeds and breaks the decree and law of Mother Nature, is arguably the zenith of engineering in the world right now. This has been fascinating me for quite a long time, ever since I was at a tender age; I have always wanted to know how planes operate and work, how they stay in the sky without crashing or how they even lift off from the ground. Since then I tried to further and get more knowledge on this aspect of engineering and technology; how they work and…

On my design preference survey I scored a 58, which falls into the category for a preference for a mixture of mechanistic and organic characteristics. Comparing predictability and adaptability, I prefer predictability more, I like knowing that the next day will have the same overall structure as the day before. As for centralized or decentralized authority, I like having someone higher up than me that I can go to for help or advice. For rules and procedures, I like having a procedure, but I like to be able to do the procedure in my own way. I prefer narrow and wide spans of control because I like to know what I am doing and just be able to do it, without having to check in with someone all the time but also be able to ask them questions and get their option.…
