In this experiment, I have obtained 2-ethyl-1-hydroxy-3-hexanone, by oxidizing 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol with commercial chlorine, Clorox. The identity of the final product was determined by Infrared Spectrum. In this experiment, I have recalled how to use starch-iodine paper to test for presence of NaOCl. Also, I have remembered how to perform simple distillation and collecting the distillate in fractions. The final product was 2-ethyl-1-hydroxy-3-hexanone and its identity was confirmed by Infrared Spectrum. A strong C=O stretch in the region of 1706.49 cm -1, C-C-C stretch-bend at the region of 1133.69 are a good evidence for a ketone.
