As a Family Advocate, I work with families and children from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. It is important to focus on building relationships of mutual trust, confidence, and respect for diverse families. After completing the observations, the anti-bias curriculum is a must to reflect the culture and background of the families and children in the program. Many families I work with are low income. My goal is to create an environment where children and families from different backgrounds can feel comfortable and belonging. I would like to work closely with families and to support the needs of families and children that I serve. So that parents have the knowledge and skills to support and extend their children’s learning. Parents attain the knowledge to help their children get on the road to success.
There are countless ways biased against low-income families. A large part of the social class stigma attached to poverty is plainly incorrect. Most people believe that the poor are poor because of their own shortcomings instead of inequitable access to services and opportunities. There are litanies of stereotypes towards poor people, such as poor people are lazy and uneducated. They are alcoholics and drug addicts. They do not want to work and depend on the social welfare system. They don’t know how to teach their children and let them run wild and dirty. Poor people don’t have the knowledge and only good for labor, but nothing else. Other stereotypes about the poor are inattentive and, as a result, parents are not effective. Low-income parents or guardians who do not attend parent-teacher meetings can become the target of stereotyping, or worse, getting blamed by those educators. Even the low-income also biases against them. They believe that they could not improve themselves and do not have the resources necessary to get out of poverty. They may give up because it cannot easily be changed. The negative attitude and beliefs from parents will influence children’s development. Children who plight are easy to fall into a state of inferiority and low self-esteem when witnessing different lives of people who have rich backgrounds. Obviously, there are more barriers for people living in poverty than there are for people who are wealthy or middle-class citizens. I think that it is important for people to think twice before making unfair and unrealistic comments about others when they don't fully understand a situation. Everyone needs to stop and think about

I am interesting in applying to PLFSOM because I have a desire to ultimately become a primary care physician that works in underserved communities. Coming from a rural area, I know what a lack of providers in a region can do to a community. I have spent a lot of time in border towns since my dads family is originally from Mexico and I have been able to see first hand that even the biggest of border towns still has a very big proportion of their population that is underserved. Right now, I already use my Spanish to help the Spanish speaking patients that we see at our clinic but my Spanish medical terminology is not as strong as I would like. Being able to get my medical education from a school so close to the border would help me become the…

Each room had a doll, hence the name “Bobo doll experiment.” The aggressive children’s group was shown an adult being extremely aggressive and beating the doll, in some cases with a hammer (McLeod n.p.). The non-aggressive children’s group was shown an adult who played with tinker toys in a quiet and subdued manner, completely ignoring the doll. The final twenty-four children were not exposed to any model at all. After this, each individual child was taken to their own room filled with toys.…

Yes, Natalie, I agree with you that the song can be interpreted in different ways. I never thought of the hotel symbolizing a rehab, but once I heard the song I could see why. I always thought that the hotel was a metaphor for a new place or country that someone has arrived to. In this new place there are opportunities and luxuries that the newcomers are amazed by. In the song he talks about wanting to see his wife, but is not able to because she is back home.…

Infants can display a lack of object permanence by crying when a toy is placed out of view, only to be joyful when it returns from hiding. Symbolic reasoning is where one object stands for another; with children, this could resemble a towel turning into a superhero’s cape. Symbolic reasoning then develops into pretend-play, where a child may imagine herself as a lion or a…

As I careened along the course for my first ever practice, I was struck with how unusual it was for me to do something so daring. Usually very cautious, I had only been asked to join Buggy a week prior, and there I was, lying only a few inches off of the ground in a motorless buggy, with my hands in front of me to steer. Peering through the windshield with an assortment of protective gear, I watched the track zoom by at 25 miles per hour. Buggy is a sport unique to Carnegie Mellon University, where students from all majors join to build and compete buggies. Looking back, there are many parallels between my experience with the sport, and the development of my career aspirations.…

In one of the experiments with My Real Baby, a child named Alana “tormented” her My Real Baby because according to her, “the robot [had] no feelings” (Turkle, 476). However, “she does not behave this way with the many other dolls” (Turkle, 476). Furthermore, another child in the same experiment said that his My Real Baby was “like a baby” (Turkle, 477). This suggests that if Alana also thought of the toy as a real baby, then she might not have reacted to the toy the way she did and was prompted to act the way she did because of the unrealistic show of denial.…

Personal Statement 2 I was about 10 years old when my parents decided they wanted me to join martial arts with my second youngest sister. As I enter the gym to present myself I saw young and older students taking the class. I saw how well discipline and how patient and well manner they all were. That actually caught my attention; in the other hand my sister hated it. Although, I was 10 years old and you would expect someone that age to hate that class because it didn’t look fun, I actually enjoyed it.…

To continue, many people are excluded just because of their financial situation. Such as, areas of high-poverty have people that are less likely to attend quality schools, live in good houses, have good healthcare, and have cheap consumer credit, and find other ways out of poverty. This is not fair because even if the people are in a tight situation, they do not need to be treated badly. Another example is that investigations have shown that Americans blame poverty on poor people and are declined to support anti- poverty attempts because they think the people in need are African American. This example ties in perfectly with both financial inequity and racism.…
