Yes, Natalie, I agree with you that the song can be interpreted in different ways. I never thought of the hotel symbolizing a rehab, but once I heard the song I could see why. I always thought that the hotel was a metaphor for a new place or country that someone has arrived to. In this new place there are opportunities and luxuries that the newcomers are amazed by. In the song he talks about wanting to see his wife, but is not able to because she is back home. He wants to go back home, but cannot because of opportunities that this new place has to offer.

If you think back to all the songs you heard three years ago in 2014, it’s of high chance that you think of the song “Radioactive”. This extremely popular song was sung by the famous rock band Imagine Dragons, and composed with the help of Alex Da Kid. When this track released, critics were praising every note and lyric. This number was introduced through many commercials and trailers, which was part of the reason it was a “sleeper hit”- a song that makes a gradual rise to popularity. “Radioactive” also holds the record for most weeks spent on the Billboard Hot 100 at 87 weeks.…

Response Essay #4: “The Blues” Deriving from the soulful spirituals and purposeful work songs the blues was born in the Deep South. African American sharecroppers developed a new outlet allowing them to channel their sorrows into something others enjoyed. Many musicians wishing to further distance themselves from the south and all the negative connotations associated with the area, decided to move northward. They themselves and their music were not always welcome as middle class African Americans frowned upon the culture in which these musicians were grown.…

Exercise 1- page 98 Who would have thought that a simple hike through the woods would result in a classic emblem of Americana? Beginning in the mid 19th century, people from all over started coming to Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee to see "Rock City" and experience its natural rock formations. In the 1920s, a businessman named Garner Carter began developing Lookout Mountain into a residential neighborhood called Fairyland, but his wife had other plans. Frieda Carter began exploring Rock City- now her property- and turning it into an elaborate rock garden. Recognizing the potential profit of his wife's ornate garden, Garnet opened Rock City to the public in 1932.…

This song connects to Johnny Depp because his parents divorced while he was still a child. The divorce of his parents, and leading up to it was hard for Depp and caused him to be “unsteady” like the child in the song. Bad activities such as smoking and dropping out of school show how the fallout of his parents affected Depp, and made him unsteady. The song relates to Guy Montag because he split with his wife himself. Montag does not have any children that are affected by the splitting of him and Mildred, but he is still negatively affected himself.…

Throughout his life, Dan Reynolds has been through some ups and downs. It is through these triumphs and struggles that he finds the words to write his songs. Each of his songs tells a story of the things he has overcome or has wrestled with in his life, whether that be love, depression, or ankylosing spondylitis—a type of arthritis. As Reynolds grows older, the tone and message of his songs change greatly from one of sorrow and self-hating to one of strength and self-love. This transition can be seen through his speakers that he created in his songs titled “My Fault”, “Believer”, and “Whatever It Takes”.…

Once I looked into the meaning behind the music, I liked it even more. The lyrics reveal what a propped up life is really like. They reveal a life that is shiny on the outside. The lyrics expose beautiful people who lead bright lives but on the inside are all messed up. Overall, the song’s message is that using drugs, crystal meth specifically, will always have a negative outcome.…

“Paris” is a single that was released for digital download worldwide on January 13, 2017. It was written and produced by The Chainsmokers, and has been #1 on US’ Hot Dance/Electronic Songs (Billboard) and #5 on US Mainstream Top 40 (Billboard). I have chosen to specifically study the music video of this piece, which was released on February 16, 2017. The lyrics to this song and the characters of the music video imply a relationship between two individuals who are presumably lovers. The song represents the corrupt L.A. lifestyle in the way that they present it, but, in the eyes of the band, it seems more about bringing awareness to ADD, Attention Deficit Disorder, in kids and adults. But the song does seem to reflect more on their lives and Armenian heritage like lines such as “eating seeds” and “do you own disorder” to tie links between the Armenian government and its people. This piece does in fact fit within their musical career for advocating that people should pay more attention to what their government is doing. With their song ATWA they wanted people to recognize Charles Manson’s view on the preservation of wildlife. From there they moved on to the Armenian genocide in their proclaimed song “Prison Song”.…

Drinking in these situations is considered normal in our society.…
