• Winston Smith is a calm, cool and collected member of the Party. In his spare time he strives to overthrow the party and establish the world as far back as his memory allows him. His plan of attack to overthrow the party is very subtle. But in the end his carefulness does him in. Society is controlled by certain departments which are the direct opposite of what their name suggests. (E.g. Ministry of Truth is actually the Ministry of lies). When the story was published in 1949, the title 1984 was meant to be a wakeup call directed to all the books readers about the constant threat of annoyance and threat that the USSR was. As the book is insight into communistic societies in which Orwell experienced. “And when memory failed and written records were falsified-When that happened, the claim of the party to have improved the conditions of human life had got to be accepted, because there did not exist, and never again could exist any standard against which it could be tested.
