Love or Hate?
The way 1984 ended was unexpected yet seemed to mark and affirm the importance of the book's message. At the end of the novel Winston loves Big Brother. It is the indoctrination that he suffers that makes him accept Big Brother. This was all because of O'Brien who tortured Winston and O'Brien who also made Winston give up Julia. After he was forced to betray Julia, and sees her later, he realizes his love for her has been destroyed. At that point Winston realizes he loves Big Brother. Winston's belief of Big Brother changed basically all because of torture. Being tortured over and over doesn't just affect your body, but your mind also. First off learning was designed to break down Winston's basis of belief. This took weeks of torture from outward capitulation to power. Moving on to the second stage understanding made Winston “understand” that the party makes it good for the people, because men are breakable, feeble, fearful and have no dignity so they need to be controlled for the good of society and for their own. He must complete understanding in order to move on to acceptance. At this point O'Brien confesses that the Party seeks obedience above all else, which also includes loving Big Brother. His last and final stage is acceptance. During this stage he accepted the fact that Big Brother is everlasting and can not be beaten, as a result Winston must figure out a way to take part in it. The third stage in Winston's reintegration is mostly about O'Brien cauterizes Winston's love for Julia. Acceptance is when he became fully dedicated and loyal to the Party and its
