In the beginning of chapter 10, Winston wakes checks the time, sees it was still early (only 8 pm) but he felt like he had been asleep for a much longer time. Outside there is a woman, who woke up Winston and Julia, doing laundry and singing. The couple become intrigued with her; while watching her realizes that she is beautiful even though she is old, poor and fat from having kids, she is beautiful in her own special way. Julia gets up to make some coffee but says there is no oil in the oven even though it was full before she fell asleep.
