Welcome back to APKN, the world’s latest and greatest news channel. Today’s story is a very hot topic – quite literally! There has been a report of three people, two of which are child delinquents, rescuing 5 eight-year-old children from being burnt alive in a church fire. APKN has confirmation from local school teacher Jerry Wood that the young children are unharmed. “‘Are…’ – I felt weak – ‘are the little kids okay?’ ‘Just fine. A little frightened maybe’” (Lowry 96). Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and Dallas Winston are the saviors listed in this breaking news story, and their ages, respectively, are fourteen, sixteen, and seventeen. Ponyboy and Johnny are child delinquents, having stabbed eighteen-year-old Robert Sheldon and murdering him as a result, and Dallas has been involved with the law for a while now. The church was set ablaze five days after Robert had been slaughtered, and when the group noticed what was happening, Ponyboy stepped right into action. “‘Oh, glory!’ he whispered. The church was on fire! ‘Let’s …show more content…

Juvenile delinquency was a national topic of discussion in the 1950’s. A movement of censorship swept through as a result of parents fearing Rock ‘n’ Roll’s challenge to traditional values and abstinence. The campaign was successful in making artists and producers of Rock ‘n’ Roll more reserved in the music they made. In doing so, they failed to damage the industry as a whole. The toned down nature of songs and performers encouraged Rock ‘n’ Roll’s acceptance to a broader audience.…

Crimes are typically committed by those who can be considered as an adult and know what they are doing at the moment. The result of the crime leads the criminals to having the death penalty or some other kind of punishment. However, once an adolescent commits a severe crime as an adult would, the ruling becomes difficult to decide upon. As a child commits a crime of any level, that child should not be tried as an adult but rather as a juvenile. Even though the juvenile commits such heinous act, others should know that children cannot function their brain properly just yet.…

Hey Emily, I also do not believe that middle class youth become delinquent for the same reasons as lower-class youth. You made an interesting point when saying that you did not think just one factor could cause juvenile delinquency. There are so many things that should also be taken into consideration for example, what is this youth’s home life like, is the youth academically sound, what are the youth’s peers like and what is the youth’s economic status? I do feel that lower-class juveniles will commit more crime based on the fact that they are poor and may need the money to possibly survive.…

After hearing the cases of Kent v. United States, 383 U.S. 541 (1966), and In re Gault, 387 U.S. 1 (1967), the Supreme Court made the decision that juveniles should have the same rights of due process as awarded to adult offenders. Justice Fortas stated that “neither the Fourteenth Amendment nor the Bill of Rights is for adults alone” and that during delinquency hearings juvenile would be allowed certain elements of Due Process to ensure that they were treated fairly (Americanbar.org). This decision led people to wonder if the country was staying true to the mission of the juvenile system of rehabilitation, because by allowing juveniles the right to due process we were changing juvenile proceedings into criminal proceedings and that was not the goal of the juvenile system. Juveniles are to be rehabilitated, while adults are to be…

“Old enough to do the crime, old enough to do the time,” Not only is this a catchy phrase that is gaining popularity, but it also represents a departure from the purpose with which the juvenile justice system was originally created over one hundred years ago‒to protect and rehabilitate young offenders. In an ideal world, counseling and rehabilitation would be enough for juvenile criminals, but oftentimes for repeat or violent offenders, this is just not enough. In the majority of cases involving violent crimes juvenile offenders must face the consequences of their actions and be tried as adults. Violent crime rates among juvenile offenders are increasing. Juveniles now are more likely than ever before to be the perpetrators of serious and deadly…
