The one major factor in each story that differs from today's society is that they were constantly being watched by their government rulers. Through telescreens, the leaders were able to watch over their district and make sure that their citizens were doing what they were supposed to be doing. Thankfully, our nation has not come to this. But then again, it does make you think? Our we too comfortable assuming that our cell phones are not being tapped? Or that we aren’t secretly being watched? Government control exists in our society but much less strict. Although we follow rules or laws that we have to obey, they are ones that are made for the better of the people and for our nation as a whole. Some may say that certain laws infringe upon our rights. The amazing thing about that is that person can freely say that, protest, and physically believe that, because he/she has that right. Unlike in 1984 and Divergent, we are not punished for disagreeing with our government. A very recent well known court case is the constitutional battle of same-sex marriage. People disagreed with this law and protested against it. After a long time of battling through court, the law was proved to be unconstitutional and was removed. This is a perfect example of citizens disagreeing with the government control and they had the ability to change
