1980 Election This was a political event because it caused a change in the government. Americans wanted a firm, patriotic leader who had a plan to fix the economic problems carrying over from the 1970s. Jimmy Carter was running for reelection, and Americans overall were very unhappy with his leadership. Ronald Reagan emerged as his challenger, a former actor with great public skills and a plan. They elected Ronald Reagan in 1980 who had a controversial plan for fixing the U.S. economy, later dubbed “Reaganomics.”

AIDS Quilt
The AIDS quilt is social event because it was a social movement to bring awareness of AIDS. Many people during this era contracted HIV which turned to AIDS and killed them. There was not much known other than people believing it is only contracted by gay men.
The quilts were made by family and friends in memory of lost loved ones died of AIDS to bring much needed research on the disease and for people to be careful about their health. It lead to intensive research which led to understanding of HIV/AIDS being a sexually contracted disease through the HIV virus. It brought forth attention to have protected sex for the wellbeing of the person.

He refused to mention AIDS during its early epidemic because it affected mainly gays as the conservatives viewed the disease as a divine vengeance for their sins, an ideology of the conservatives of the country. He mentioned it on September 1985, after more than 10,000 people had died from the disease. In 1986, Reagan called for a report on AIDS but proposed cutting federal funds for research and care as treatments making through for his fellow Americans. Reagan vetoed the Civil Rights Restoration Act and opposed extending provisions to the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He opposed making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday as a national holiday. He was supportive to apartheid South Africa, considering that country a friend and ally to the governemnt therefore tried so hard in office to overturn Congress sanctions but failed. It showed he is against humanity meaning the world.
