The 1950s-1970s were some of the greatest and most significant times in American history. During the 1950's, the Civil Rights Movement took place and aimed towards gaining equal human rights like allowing blacks and whites to use the same public facilities, such as restrooms, dining areas, and water fountains. It also aimed towards equal voting rights for African Americans. It helped in the percentage of African Americans being sent to prison for being charged for wrongdoings and even helped with funding schools and providing education to every race, during this era. The Civil Rights Movement put an end to all Jim Crow Laws that were set in place, during the time when there was state-legalized separation between blacks and whites in schools…
Fashion: 1960's fashion was bi-polar in just about every way. The early sixties were more reminiscent of the 1950's, conservative and restrained certainly more classic in style and design. The late 1960's were the exact opposite. Bright swirling colors. Psychedelic, tie-dye shirts and long hair and beards were commonplace.…
The people of the 1920s put on a show. America was a new generation in the making; jazz music and female independence was blooming. Womens fashion reflected the newly changing time period with freewheeling, flashy dresses that developed a new conception for the modified image of females. Both the civil rights movements share similarities in regard to their purpose. One reason why the civil rights movement began during the Reconstruction Era and during the 1960s was to gain rights for African Americans. Before the Reconstruction Era civil rights movement, most African Americans were slaves. Slaves were not seen as people in the southern states, instead they were seen as property of the slave master.…
The 1960’s were a very tumultuous time. Every aspect of society and culture was progressing rapidly, and the world was faced with difficult trials. Major events, such as Kennedy’s assassination, exposed evil in the world and ultimately diminished the concept of American innocence. It was also a time of great leadership. I think in this time period there was a fascination with standing out, being different, and acting somewhat risky. For example, in this period of time wearing short skirts or flappers, drinking, and engaging in African-American culture was rebellious in a way that made people want to do it. Another reason why African-American culture became popular is also because of jazz music. It originally was mainly played in African-American cities and neighborhoods and became popular with clubs and the younger generation of whites who made jazz popular. African-American poetry as well as other art that artists such as Hughes appealed to not only black people, but white people in America as well.…

Through sit-ins, marches and many other form of peaceful protest the Civil rights moment was able to grow and prosper. Some may feel in order to understand teenage life in the 60s you have to be there to experience there life. I personal think this is true, you could have some type of understanding from history but you will never fully understand the life they lived unless you were there to live it. When people think of the sixties, they automatically think of things like Woodstock, drugs, and unhygienic long-haired teenagers. In 1960s John Kennedy was a young president that symbolized a spirit of hope for the nation especially true for the teenagers. When Kennedy was murder many felt that their hopes died to.…
There are said to have inspired the Chicano Brown Berets in particular, an organization dedicated to Mexican American liberty. But of course we know that that BPP’s greatest following was amongst their own people. Black women began to reject white beauty standards and embrace their hair in its natural state. Yet, this was not the first time something like this had been done. In fact, women who were apart of the Civil Rights Movement also embraced this style but it is arguably certain that this time natural beauty was embraced even more.…

Figure 2 is a photo of my grandparents on my mom’s side at my grandma’s high school prom in 1958. In our interview, my grandma stated, “I wore a gown that I re-used from a wedding. We were a poor immigrant family, so it was really hard to go out and buy something new” (Giorgi, n.p.). Her dress has a sweetheart neckline with a full skirt at ballerina length. The sweetheart neckline became popular in 1940s evening wear, but was still used in the 50s.…
As with any conflict, the postwar world can be drastically different to the world that existed during the war. The fashion trends that existed during the war were typically aimed at practicality in the workplace. Furthermore, the rationing during the war led to a decline in fabrics and clothing availability, so the fashion industry was not significant during this time. Gradually, as World War II ended, the trends begin to be less practical and focused more on overall appearance. Women’s clothing in particular began to be burdened with excess fabric, collars, petticoats, pleats, gatherings, and other fabrics.…
