I had seen one episode of 1940?s House when it aired on PBS… but until the other day I had never watched the rest of it. I don’t really like anyone in the show except the smallest little boy and sometimes the mother. Spoiled, complaining, jerks… the whole lot of them. My dad was alive back then and he said you helped out where you could, regardless of age, you didn’t just sit around and complain about not having candy. Also, I didn’t really like the house much, it was very bland. I did take something away from the show however… to use less. The author, Joan Acocella, begins this article by discussing her own personal experience with hoarding. She explains how her mother would hoard Meals On Wheels containers and even after repeatably emptying her over-filled cabinets, her mother would just re-fill them. This was a very good strategy to show a connection between the author and the topic in which this article was written about. Throughout this article it was clear to understand that not only was it informative, but also entertaining and persuasive.…

My interest in CHE, and in particular the PAM major, is influenced by my rewarding and eye opening volunteer experiences and today’s pressing social policy issues that confront our country. For the past three summers, I volunteered with an organization that helps poverty stricken families repair and improve their homes in central Appalachia. I respect and care for the home owners, but each year I am discouraged by their poor daily health habits. It is commonplace to see pregnant mothers smoking cigarettes, overweight adults spending much of the day watching TV, and young children eating cheez-doodles and a drinking a can of soda for breakfast.…

Similarly, Honey Brown’s autobiographical, The Silver Linings, depicts the adversities and obstacles that she faced as she embarked on a painful journey of rediscovery, ultimately moving into a new world of self-acceptance and independence, shifting her…
