Nineteen Minutes 1/6 The first book I read in contemporary literature was a book called Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. Bullying and being bullied is the main theme of the book. The main character Peter Houghton was bullied from his early childhood through his adolescence and one day he had enough. He brought guns into Sterling High, the high school which he attended, and killed 10 people and wounded nineteen. His lawyer tries to prove his innocence by showing how often and harshly he was bullied and the traumatic stress caused by it. First, I will discuss whether parents should be teach their kids to fight back against bullies. I do not believe that parents should teach their children to fight back against bullies. In the book Lacy Houghton tries to do this with Peter by banning him from seeing Josie

They should know the difference between joking around and major bullying however and not overreact to small things. Major bullying should be rooted out though with major punishments to help stop the rash of school shootings led to by students being bullied. This will be a hard balance to maintain but I believe it can be done. Lastly, I do think bullies need to take responsibilities for their actions. They realize what they are doing is wrong and should be punished for it if they are caught. In the book Drew tried to lie to the lawyers when asked if he bullied Peter and got upset when he had to tell the whole town the things he did to him in court. He did not want to take responsibility for his actions. In conclusion, I found Nineteen Minutes to be a very good book to read. It had an interesting plot and made me think about our own high school. I would recommend this book to other people who enjoy reading. It did a very good job of showing both sides of bullying. It also showed the value of family during a

In "A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men" by Thomas Scarseth, the professor argues that "Of Mice and Men" is a tragedy, in which it is simple, yet complicated as it provides wonderful examples of realism and problems in the world, despite being a short read. Scarseth provides many claims and examples supporting the thesis of his paper, which will be highlighted in this essay. The claims are: every story doesn't have to have a happy ending, objectionable elements are necessary as they make stories more realistic, and not everything someone wishes for comes true. Scarseth's first point states that every story doesn't have to have a happy ending. Scarseth made this claim by stating in his paper, "...literature is not always only mere sugar candy; it can sometimes be a strong medicine: sour perhaps- at least to the untrained taste- but necessary for continued health.…

“Who would Peter Be today ?”. by Estrada , Pg.69 Base on my own experience, I believe one of the reasons why many children accept other children being bullied , and they rarely step in to help the bullied children is the feeling of being isolated and bullied back from the other kids . There are many examples in social life show this for us every day and even in movies . When a group of students bully a kid and one member in a group have a thought that is unfair and want to protect the bullied kid, then all the other members in the group will bully that student, who don’t want to bully the kid anymore, until he can’t take the pressure and comeback. The scare feeling for standing up and being different from the other kids make the children not only stay where who they are but also stand there and watch the kid being bullied.…

Stop Bullying After reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls the realization really set in on how bullying affected people back then and how it still affects people nowadays. Jeannette had problems fitting in because she was different which seems to be the cause of many bullying issues. The bullying did not seem to affect her too much, she did not tell her parents because they would have made it a big deal, but she did fight most of the girls that bullied her. Jeannette had a lot of struggles she had to overcome throughout the book and in the end it made her a better person.…

As we become more knowledgeable on the subject of bullying, we can notice how the effects it has on both the victim and the bully can be dangerous. In his article, “Bullying”, John Greenya suggests that the connection between bullying and school violence has become a growing problem that schools aren't doing enough to prevent. He does this by first explaining that “today, bullying is widely regarded as a serious problem in the United States”, then by stating “bullying not only begets depression and suicide but also serious crime, researchers say, not to mention poor academic performance, truancy and higher dropout rates” (Greenya). Greenya finally describes how “in the past, bullying has simply been dismissed as ‘Kids will be kids,’ but the findings from this study suggest that…

There are many types of bullying, but the two most common are physical and verbal. This means that a person will either use his or her body or words to make someone feel weak and hopeless. When conflicts arise, bullies use the same tactics to get what they want, even if it means hurting other people. Bullies rarely change their ways, much like Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

This is the strongest piece of work that is about bullying and how it effect kids and the families. The way the movie was shot was perfect, it felt like I was there in the school, living room, and so many more places. There was a small part with the principle of Alex’s school asking the kids who bullied him about why they did. I wish they would have had more pieces like that in the movie because it made me even more interested in the problem. I have done research about bullying before and most of the time the kids that are getting bullied are also getting bullied at home by either other sibling, parents or even old kids that live close to them.…

I have chosen to volunteer with my Catholic Church to fulfill my hours for volunteer work this semester. After thinking long and hard about what I could do besides teach the children about their religion and help them develop their own opinions, I agreed that I should use this platform for something just as good to be spread. Together, with the church, we set up classes to teach the children about the struggles of bullying and find ways to connect their religion to the issue at hand. After throwing a couple ideas around, I decided that teaching the students about bullying could be the best idea for the children and for the community at large. Teaching about bullying would be better especially compared to a fundraiser that would not be…

Bullying is most certainly not a new concept in our contemporary society, not by any measure. This problem has existed for a number of years, and in a great number of separate forms. However, no matter when it occurs or what form it takes, bullying is an issue that must be stopped. This is the very point that Lee Hirsch, director of The Bully Project, also known as Bully, is trying to make. Through the film, he hints at a number of different ideas that surround bullying and its existence, like the magnitude of the impact that it has, and that people consistently ignore the issue.…

Bullying, whether it is physical, mental, emotional, or even online, is a very big and troubling issue in the United States today. Throughout the many years of elementary, middle, and high school, odds are most people came across a situation that would be classified as bullying. The problem with this is that very few people actually do something about it. I have seen the effects of what bullying can do to a person, especially someone who is already self-conscious. Summer camp, after fifth grade, I witnessed someone my age being bullied.…
