The brutality of this gang stands unmatched by any other major gang; the only true rival is 18th street gang which is also a Hispanic gang. In late 2010 El Salvador had a total of 27,000 gang members from both MS-13 and 18th St. The violence between the two was so intense that governments had to step in order to settle some sort of truce just to control the violence. It does not stop there however, MS has gone head to head with a very dangerous and powerful cartel known as Los Zetas. In 2010 MS had a run in with Zetas over territory which resulted in a bloody war that ended with a truce and an agreement between the two; MS would control the southern portion of the territory while the Zetas would control the northern area (Farah 2012).
