As I reviewed literature already done by scholars, I came across a scholarly pair by the names of Jennifer Castro and Bart Landry as well as a handful of other authors who had formerly touched on different pieces of my research question. In 2005, Castro and Landry wrote an article by the name of Race, Gender, and Class Variation in the Effect of Neighborhood Violence on Adolescent Use of Violence. In this article, the scholarly pair examined how Neighborhood Violence led to the Adolescents use of violence and how Race, Gender and Class played a huge part in it. Neighborhood Violence can range from Drive by shootings, to neighborhood gang fights. In Castro’s…
It is not only social factors or political factors that lead gang violence. Personal factors play an important part in gangs choosing violence and it is the most frequent cause of violence by gang members. Especially when it comes to seek revenge for perceived slights or previous disputes gangs use their utmost power and resources (Buchanan, 2014). A member can be attacked for belonging to a rival gang, living in the same neighborhood of a different gang, or to settle an old score between gang members or their families. Sometimes revenge leads to a series of crimes.…
The most recent estimate of more than 30,000 gangs represents a 15 percent increase from 2006 and is the highest annual estimate since 1996. Gang violence in America has been a major problem in this country which affects several communities and several major cities all throughout America. Oftentimes, torturers use brutal, humiliating tactics to instill a sense of fear and cowardice within the abused. After the civil war and the emancipation of the slaves, the Reconstruction period brought on intense periods of racial violence due to controversial ideas about the authentic meaning of freedom. Controlled by fear, white men utilized violence to maintain their supremacy above African American men in post-Reconstruction South.…
The book, Gang Life in Two Cities: An Insider’s Journey, by Robert J. Durán to be put simply, is about the gang life in Denver, CO and Ogden, UT. Durán created this book to share his research findings. Durán, an ex-gang member himself was curious on how and why gangs operate.…
When it comes to Latin American gangs that operate in multiple countries, many people may think of gangs such as the MS-13 or the Latin Kings. However, there is another gang that is just as violent and large as the ones that I have mentioned above, and they are known as the 18th Street Gang, or Barrio 18. As for colors, they wear blue, and as for symbols, they use the number 18, or they occasionally spell the number out using Roman numerals. We see traces of the gang originating as far back as the 1950’s, in Los Angeles, California, but the first official sightings of the gang are seen in the 1980’s in the same location, and gained attention in the Rodney King Riots that occurred in 1992.…
