On October 17, 1899 the Thousand Day war had begun among the Conservative party and Liberals. The Liberal group represented coffee plantation of owners and workers who had been excluded from the government after the Conservatives took power in the 1890’s. The revolution started on October 17, 1899, the same date of the blowup of the Boer war. The government had 75,000 men under arms, the revolutionists believed to have collected 35,000 of them. 400 combats that were of greater or lower importance were reported on February 1902 and the number of men killed on both sides was about 50,000.
