1888 Van Gogh The Night Cafe Essay

In 1888 Van Gogh created The Night Café using oil paints on a canvas. It's title alone depicts it almost to a tee, however, what one might envision without seeing it would be completely subjective. The same concept can be applied to what one feels when looking at this work. The painting depicts a very eerie room with colors that clash and are almost painful to look at. However, you’re drawn in by a man standing off in the corner of the room who appears to be staring at you. He almost looks as though he doesn’t belong and one could imagine that so do you to him, but there is no you in the painting, you yourself out of the painting is the you in the painting.
When looking at this work it immediately makes me feel very lonely, almost anxious. The focal point seems to be the center of the room, more so the pool table and the waiter. The waiter stands out more than anything else because of his cream and yellow under toned outfit. The reason he stands out so much is because the walls are almost florescent red, the lights are this mac and cheese yellow, and in various places the most prevalent being the pool table is a puke green. So a cream colored object is bound to stand out and look almost as though it doesn’t belong. One can’t be entirely sure what the topic of this work is as it’s not something that is so clear. Perhaps it’s the

It looks as though there are faint shadows behind almost everything in the work. While the size of the work is small the shadows are natural and life sized. The art work isn’t very big, it’s about as wide as a medium sized body would be. Given how wide it is the figures are far from life size. Technically speaking it changes nothing from my own perspective because I can view it at a much larger size than those who view it in person. In person it might look quite odd to be viewing tiny people in a tiny café. Almost like a portal into the tiny

After the film had aired, both Theo van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received thousands of death threats, which resulted in the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the seclusion of Hirsi Ali. According to some scholars, Theo van Gogh’s troubled history with the Muslim community justified the leaders blaming the film that for spreading Islam phobia. Theo van Gogh was a well-known Dutch filmmaker/author and is the great grand nephew of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. Unfortunately, Theo van Gogh was not famous for his well written books or inspiring documentaries but rather for his controversial outspoken opinions on Muslims, Jews and Christians or as I say the “former Donald Trump” of his time.…

In this picture by Diet Wiegman, called Shadow dancing, light and shadow is used to create an identifiable image of Michael Jackson on the wall behind it. The image is formed by projecting a lamp on a sculpture that has been created to produce the form that will constitute the bulk of the picture. Light is angled and focused on the sculpture, which is then beamed on the wall creating the illusion of the famous figure through the use of light and shadow. The image is made by the solid object, the sculpture, and the light reflects the shadow for the viewer to see. The use of the principle of light and shadow makes it possible for the art to be recognizable, as Michael Jackson, and is the foundation for the outline and solid black fill.…

The subject matter in The Convalescent is a literal depiction of a young girl who appears to be sick in bed and is passing the time while reading a book. Therefore, this realistic piece is focuses on the young girl. When looking at this piece a viewer is automatically drawn to her, making her the focal point for a viewer. This is because she is distinguished from the rest of the work through placement and the colors used to draw a viewer’s eye to her. By using her as the subject matter, it creates a piece that is transformed into something more meaningful with its content, or the overall meaning of why Willard Metcalf chose to produce this piece.…

By consciously creating with a loose stroke he is able to give an unpolished and unkempt quality to his subject matter. The blotchy tonality that the skin tone color gives off does not work in favor for the man but gives him an exposed quality as he is not idealized and highly polished as a Classical rendering of a figure would be but stripped to show authenticity. Thus, it works like a sheen overlay that heightens the lost look that the man holds and allows the viewer the ability to interpret this as not being a figure of high stature or esteem. This idea is fully delivered in the gaze of the man who looks beyond to the right and is off focused from the viewer and glazed over. The application around the eyes gives a lack luster quality to the almost listless eyes that speaks to a hard and unfavorable life.…

Art is like a window to the mind, representing how one thinks or what one feels. In some cases, it may contain elements from one’s unconscious; elements that even they are not aware of themselves. Art has zero qualifications, allowing it to be crafted by anyone and everyone, while still containing components of its creator and provoking feelings in its spectators. (Rustin, 2008) Of the pieces involved in the Best of the Season exhibit at the Webber Gallery, Lunch With Einstein by David D’Alessandris is one of the more “unusual” pieces. It contains four figures, whose heads seem to be taken from elsewhere and pasted onto their bodies.…

Kehinde Wiley: A Twist on Urban Culture Kehinde Wiley’s art work gives a twist to urban culture, and highlights a group of people who is usually persecuted for their beliefs, looks and culture. His exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art left my mind in “aha,” and in fact, inspired me to dig deeper into his works. My intriguing curiosity led me to his website http://kehindewiley.com/about . The streets of Harlem awakened Wiley’s keen eye to the natural-raw form of the brown skinned man; and eventually, took him on a journey to countries such as: Brazil, Jamaica, Haiti, Africa and the Middle East.…

The darkness of the installation was like a setup of the dark mood of the photograph you were about to view. In big bold black and white lighting, you see this photo of social injustice staring back at you. At first, you experience shock, then you feel a sense of understanding, and after a few moments of pensive thinking, this piece of art makes you realize that society really hasn’t changed one bit. I thought it was…

As stated previously, the painting makes viewers feel dejected and sorrowful because of the strong, dark hue and the way the food items are placed around the table, as if they’ve been given up on. Despite the symbol of wealth, this dinner does not convey a happy feeling. Viewers can almost imagine a group of unhappy, rich people dining on exotic, expensive foods, and then leaving the uneaten food and plates on the table, forgotten. There is no sign of interpersonal relationships or friendships of any kind in the picture; the scene is quite distant and aloof. The artist is attempting to convey the detachment and aloneness that often comes hand in hand with great wealth.…

This pair is also completely unaware of the man sitting across from them, who is just as isolated and alone as they are. Also, the similar theme of being trapped in one’s own world is conveyed in this painting. There are no doors pictured in the painting which illustrates the concept that Americans are focused on themselves and trapped inside their minds without any care for others. This bar appears to be situated in the city, but there is no one out on the streets. The city is desolate which leads to the feeling of aloneness and isolation.…

I decided to chose Object 1: Vincent van Gogh, Café Terrace at Night, 1888, oil on canvas, KröllerMuller Museum, Otterlo for my design summary/formal analysis. Two elements utilized in this piece of art are texture and color. Texture is the surface quality of a work (Dewitte, Larmann, Shields 62). Color is the optical effect caused when reflected white light of the spectrum is divided into a separate wavelength (Dewitte, Larmann, Shields 92). Implied Texture is displayed throughout this canvas.…

He takes a typical view of one entering a bar and almost tilts it on an axis by placing the viewer in the corner of the room. The tables lining the walls filled with what appears to be drunk customers and their tables littered with drinks adds to the depressing feel he originally intended with his color selection. Van Gogh places what appears to be a representation of himself besides the pool table all alone with nothing but the bottle. This appears to be a nod to Van Gogh’s self awareness of alcoholism. He balances this focal point with the open doorway located to the left implying an emptiness as well as forcing the viewer to wonder what lies…
