In “Learning to Love the (shallow, divisive, unreliable) New Media” by James Fallows, society believes that our media is declining, while others view it as the next step “to a brighter future.” The “new media” has given the public a wider range of material to follow, but most isn’t considered “important news.” Infotainment like Gawkers “I had a one-night stand with Christine O’Donnell” is the new scene in media, focusing on what people “want.” The new system has left people disconnected with politics, has made us distracted in life, and has many stories left out.…

Postman’s overarching idea is that the television has changed not only the way in which news is presented to the public, but also that it has changed the very way we think. Although his book has two parts, I would like to divide it into three. First, Postman writes about the nature of information and how it relates to both the medium that is conveying it and the audience that is receiving it. As mention above, reporter’s essential role is to provide masses with information, therefore people’s voice should be decisive whether journalists are, as Woodward and Bernstein, crusaders or betrayers of truth, as Jayson Blair or Rupert Murdoch. In fact, public opinion about media representative is unfavourable. In 2009 38% of people taking part in the survey declared that journalists contribute a lot to the society’s well-being, but in 2013 numbers went down and this time only 28% agreed with this statement. Furthermore, in the very same year 27% claimed that reporters actually do not contribute to the society at all (Pew Research Center 2013). The data suggests that journalism is not a trustworthy industry and many people in the United States do not respect this profession, especially older people and Republicans, which may be a result of Democrats ruling the country at the moment which leads to, Republicans may argue, governmental influence on media…
