18 Year Reflection

May 8, 2017 was the first day of college for me after being out of high school for 18 years. I am attempting to pursue a nursing degree and I am required to take 8 pre-requisites before I can apply to the nursing program. I decided to take English 111 first but only because that is what my advisor suggested. I have never liked reading or writing and therefore was not looking forward to taking this class. Additionaly, this semester was like a rollercoaster because Mrs. Patrick had to condense 16 weeks of work into 8 weeks because of the summer semester being shorter than the fall and spring semesters. However, I still learned a lot of valuable information and also gained confidence in my writing skills. We wrote six minor essays and four major essays in addition to our weekly homework and we managed to do all of this in just 8 …show more content…
Prior to this class I would just write all my jumbled thoughts on paper and it was so unorganized that I didn’t even know where to start. These steps have helped me tremendously as well as using an outline. Furthermore, I learned about a writer’s audience and how important this is when writing your essays. Prior to this class, I didn’t give much, if any thought to who my audience was or if I should be writing in first, second, or third person. Knowing who your audience is will help set the tone of your paper. The most important thing that I have learned from taking this class is that your teacher can make or break you. As I stated earlier, I never liked reading or writing and always thought I was terrible at writing, but Mrs. Patrick always encouraged me and instead of just telling her students what they did wrong, she would actually show or tell them how to correct the issues, which made a huge difference. Mrs. Patrick made this a good experience and now I don’t mind reading and writing so much and learned that it can actually be

In this fall semester of college what I’ve learned in Ms. Balderas class is knowing how to properly write a college written essay. I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. Generally, my overall goal for this course, as I stated in week one, was to “make my writing more orderly, less time-consuming, and more efficient overall.” As I reflect on the progress I have made, I recognize that I have had some success in meeting this goal, although I still have room for improvement. Thanks to our experience in composing outlines, my writing is better organized and more concise.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
