During the first session, Katherine appears to be unprepared at first clip: 17:37minutes. I have learned that I should schedule personal timing and session so I will be well prepared to start my first session smoothly. This will help my client to start to feel comfortable and build trust on me and not judging me as Adam ask Katherine “I’m your first patient, aren’t I?” (Williams, 2015) and she say “No, not at all” from that I can see and tell that Adam already felt lost trust at first with her because she has less experience. Even though this will be my first client I must be well prepared and confident so my client will be in the same way. Other than that, Katherine is doing the therapy as part of her dissertation, technically making Adam

Samuel Seium. The help that I would seek from my supervisor would be everything because I want to gather the most information that I can for myself and the betterment of this client. I would have a list of goals that I would show to my supervisor and get recommendations on what I should add or take away. When goals are picked, I would make a list of interventions and seek guidance from my supervisor on what should be added or removed. I would have the same formula when developing outcome measures so we can create realistic measures within ten sessions.…

Throughout my experience at Northern Wyoming Mental Health my knowledge has been vastly broadened to the true interworking’s that can be attributed to the world of addiction. There is a very large difference between what is taught in classes and what really goes on behind the scenes of someone working in this field. One of the many aspects within this field that I didn’t really understanding was assessment worked and what the intake process of a client really entailed. I had the privilege of sitting in on assessments and talking with therapists in order to get a better understanding of what really goes on when a person first comes to therapy. Though these procedures more than likely vary between different mental health service provider, this…

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

The comics Lighter Than My Shadow, Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, & Me, and “Adventures in Depression” and “Depression Part 2” from Hyperbole and a Half each depict the struggles of mental illness in distinct ways. Interestingly, all of them share a unique element in portraying this mental illness. Each comic uses imagery of the main character interacting with what seems to be another self. This fragmenting self is used to highlight each character’s growth and progress from their illness. This is achieved by both the overall juxtaposition between the fragments as well as the different levels of interactions between the two entities.…

The first video I viewed was Carl Rogers and Client Centered Therapy. In Client Centered Therapy, according to Rogers, the therapist needs to be genuine and congruent while displaying a nothing hidden attitude (1965). Prior to his session with Gloria, he said, “realness in me equals realness in her” (1965). It is important in Client Centered Therapy for the therapist to display attending skills by actively listening to what the client is saying; thus allowing them to explore deep within themselves. I did notice during the video that Rogers sat leaning forward, a style used in active listening.…

Lundahl and Burke (2009) state that an established therapeutic relationship must be present in order to build trust between clinician and consumer. If a therapeutic relationship is not established, there is an increased chance of a consumer being resistant to change. This is highlighted in Chang et al. (2014) study. By commencing their first session face-to-face, it allowed clinician and consumer to develop a therapeutic relationship, prior to the weekly phone sessions.…

This time gave me an opportunity to undertake reflective listening through active listening which according to Rogers (1975) in his “client-centered” therapy argues that it encourages the client to share the information in more depth than if I was only asking directive questions. This enabled me to gain information when the client brought out the underlying issues including those that I had not thought about. The active listening also improved my relationship with the client since I was able to express acceptance by avoiding any expression of disagreement or judgement thus making him open up and also trust me as his couselor. This method also left me with enough time to explore and diagnose the issue thus noting the new ways of approach to the…
