While walking on a hill Deckard is hit by a rock much like Mercer, the almost Godlike figure that people follow when they use a tool called an empathy box, however in this instance Deckard is not using the machine. Deckard is frightened and confused when he cannot tell himself from Mercer and is unable to separate his own thoughts and emotions like he would be able to when he took his hands off of the handles of the empathy box. He tells a phone operator, “I had the absolute, utter, completely real illusion that I had become Mercer and people were lobbing rocks at me. But not the way you experience it when you hold the handles of an empathy box. When you use an empathy box you feel you’re with Mercer. The difference is I wasn’t with anyone; I was alone,” (234 Dick) during this realization Deckard sees how the use of the machine forces a fusion that he cannot come out
