Towards the end of the novel we see that the androids have come together for safety much like they did in the movie, however they seem to care less about protecting one another and more about the scientific odds of winning if they fight together vs. apart. While explaining an alarm system he is creating Batty is asked by Isidore, “Won’t the alarm affect us?” to which Pris says, “That’s right…It’ll affect Isidore,” (162 Dick) meaning J.R. the human who has been so kind to help and protect them. Batty responds with, “Well, so what…So they both go racing out of here panic-stricken. It’ll still give us time to react,” (162 Dick) showing how he does not possess the same empathy for J.R. as J.R. has for them. This is a great distinction because J.R. is considered a different kind of other, a chicken head. He is not as intelligent as other humans and is lesser because of it, yet he is able to express empathy more than androids but also more than most healthy minded humans.

While walking on a hill Deckard is hit by a rock much like Mercer, the almost Godlike figure that people follow when they use a tool called an empathy box, however in this instance Deckard is not using the machine. Deckard is frightened and confused when he cannot tell himself from Mercer and is unable to separate his own thoughts and emotions like he would be able to when he took his hands off of the handles of the empathy box. He tells a phone operator, “I had the absolute, utter, completely real illusion that I had become Mercer and people were lobbing rocks at me. But not the way you experience it when you hold the handles of an empathy box. When you use an empathy box you feel you’re with Mercer. The difference is I wasn’t with anyone; I was alone,” (234 Dick) during this realization Deckard sees how the use of the machine forces a fusion that he cannot come out
