British authors and literature from the 1500-1600 era made a significant impact on how and what British writers covered after this era. There were many other big and important historical events in this era. The first trip around the entire world happened during this era. It was masterminded by Ferdinand Magellan in 1519 and ended in 1522. There were bad things that happened in this era too. One such example is the Saint Bartholomew’s Day massacre in 1572. It was caused by many causes like the failed assassination of Admiral de Coligny and the end of the third War of Religion. It happened shortly after those events occurred when King Charles IX ordered the massacre of the Huguenots and it took place five days after the wedding of the king’s …show more content…
Many of the more famous artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael did some of their most famous works of art during this time. Michelangelo sculpted the statue of David in 1504 and it was different than the earlier depictions of David as those were made to look heroic. Michelangelo made his after David’s decision to fight Goliath but before the actual fight. He also sculpted the statue Moses in 1515 for Pope Julius II who commissioned Michelangelo to make it for his tomb. He also painted the roof of the Sistine chapel in 1512 and is considered a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art. Another of the great artists is the great Leonardo da Vinci. His most famous work is by far the Mona Lisa which he painted between 1503 and 1517. While he is most famous for being a painter he was also a great inventor and is often credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter, and tank. Raphael’s best known work is The School of Athens and is part of Raphael’s commission to decorate a room in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. He made many other works of art such as St. George, Saint George and the Dragon, and La Fornarina. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael are considered to be the three biggest artists and sculptors of this era. John Lyly was born in Kent, England in 1533. He is considered to be the first English prose stylist to leave an enduring impression on the language and helped develop the use of prose dialogue in English comedy. He went to London after he graduated from Oxford where he made two prose romances Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit in 1578 and Euphues and His England in 1580. These two works made him the most famous English writer of the 1580s. After 1580 Lyly went from romance to comedy works. In 1583 he gained control of the Blackfriars Theatre where most of his plays were shown and all but one were presented by The Children of Paul’s. The finest of these plays is considered to be Endimion which was made in 1588 which some critics hold to be a masterpiece. Lyly’s popularity unfortunately waned when new writers such as William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Thomas Kyd began to rise to popularity and fame. Another author of this time was Sir Thomas More. Thomas More was born in London, England in 1478. He got into law but was able to keep up his literary interests while practicing law. More published the work Utopia in 1516 about an island where everything is governed by reason. It covered many topics like punishment, euthanasia, and women’s rights. These topics in the books led to More being considered as a foremost humanist. More helped King Henry VIII respond to Martin Luther and became Henry’s
