I had long been interested in medicine, but by my sophomore year of high school I had no doubt that I wanted to dedicate my life toward emergency medicine. An experience that has been more influential than any other in my life was going to Tampa Bay, Florida with the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. In Florida, I attended a 14 day Field Medical Advanced Training Program where I learned about emergency medicine with a focus on military situations. We were introduced to an array of doctors and surgeons that practiced emergency medicine in combat. These men and women taught us about their role in stabilizing recently wounded soldiers, and performing imperative medical procedures. While attending this program, I assisted in an emergency situation at a local VA hospital that occurred when a veteran was unexpectedly injured. I was awarded the “Naval Commendation for Medical Services” for my quick and appropriate actions. This shaped me into the person I am today, reinforcing my strong desire to help others throughout my life. …show more content…

The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

As an enthused pre-medical student, I was ecstatic to observe and talk with a myriad of specialized surgeons and physicians that worked in my local hospital. As part of the capstone project for the middle college, I reflected upon each day of shadowing in a journal and reflected upon the experience overall at the end. I can compare what I had learned at the time to what I think of the experience now after working with patients for over a year. In addition to illustrating teamwork, leadership, and excellent communication skills at the time, I learned about the physicians’ lifestyles of working in the hospital and many of the challenges that are associated with these professions. I was enthused to overcome these barriers and become my role model anesthesiologist, who treated me many years before.…
